Frank is insisting on taking me somewhere for my 30th Birthday in December. The only trouble is that I can not decide on where to go. Here are are few ideas we had. Have you ever been to any of these places? Would you recommend to go to them? How would the weather be in December? Things to do? Any other location ideas?
- San Antonio, Texas
- Vail, Colorado
- Burlington, Vermont

Re: Long weekend ideas
Vermont will probably be freezing and snowy in December. If you're into outdoor winter sports (skiing, snowboarding) then VT may be a good option, but otherwise, there probably won't be much to do.
If you want to do New England, but aren't into winter sports, I'd go for southern New England. We sometimes have snow in December, but it usually doesn't get too bad until after Christmas. There's always plenty to do in Boston and Newport, RI can be fun too.
I'd go to San Antonio during the winter. (I went to college there and I miss it so much!)
The missions are neat, you can go to the Alamo, walk on the Riverwalk, go see live music in Gruene, go to a country dance hall (where Willie Nelson got his start!), and there is some great shopping and food.
Austin is another fun place to go for a short vacation. They are close enough together that you could take a day trip out to one or the other if you'd like. If you're into nightlife, Austin has waaay more late-night things to do than SA.
Oh also, there's a neat little conglomeration of craft shops, boutiques, and restaurants that put on a great Christmas night. They open up everything late at night, have carolers and all sorts of treats, and you can get a holiday dinner at a quaint little restaurant. It was one of the things I really looked forward to every year. I can't find a date for this year's but you could call and ask if you ended up going to SA and wanted to go to it.
If y'all enjoy holiday music, there are some good (classical) holiday concerts at the local colleges.
I've been to Tahoe, which I'm guessing is like Vail, and I LOVED it. I am not a skiier, but it's just romantic with a nice fire, etc
Vail or any of the other Colorado mountain towns are good in December. There are no crowds and often off-season rates. It's cold, but not frigid because of the altitude an dry air. You can go snowshoeing, skiing, x-country skiing, tubing. If you aren't into the outdoors, there are hot springs (Glenwood Springs), spas, scenery, shoping, etc.
One thought - the mountains off of 1-70 can be an hour or more from DIA. You might want to look into flying into Avon, Telluride, Aspen or one of the other smaller airports that are in the mountains.
I'd probably choose Vail for the winter aspect since we don't get that in the South. I'm not sure how the skiing is around that time, but I have friends that go every year right after the holidays and they love it.
San Antonio is nice idea too.
