Question for moms who have flown before

On Thursday DH, Brynn and I are off to the Bay Area so my grandmother can meet her newest great grandchild. It will be a short trip, fly in on Thurs. fly out on Sunday (otherwise I would say Amy and I should try and meet up). We are very lucky that my cousin has a 1 year old who just grew out of her infant seat and they have a pnp and a stroller. I am so thrilled that we don't have have to travel with any of the big stuff. Besides clothes, diaper supplies, blankets, a couple toys, and the baby monitor. Suggestions for anything you can think of for flying with a 4 month old? We are bringing the bjorn for in the airport and I am calling the airline to double check about rules for flying with infants. Also any suggestions for the actual flying part, ears, breast milk through security etc...?

Re: Question for moms who have flown before

  • I flew with Lucy when she was 5 mo old.

I brought the boppy and I nursed her during take off/landing so that her ears wouldn't hurt.

Honestly I wouldn't bring any pumped milk with you if you can just nurse especially if it is just the two of you.

you shouln't have any problem BUT I know that some people have had issues with breastmilk, so for me it wouldn't be worth it unless I needed it. I'd print off the TSA rules showing that ANY amount of BM is ok to take with them and I'd give yourself plenty of time

Also if you are using sposies, you may just want to buy diapers there instead of lugging them with you but that depends how much you have ;) HAVE FUN!

  • I flew with Brody when he was 2 months old. It's a HUGE help that all the big stuff will be there for you.

Ditto Christina on buying diapers there if you use sposies. I made sure to pack an extra outfit for DS in my diaper bag, as well as an extra shirt for me in case he spit up. And inseat of the Boppy, I brought one of those neck pillows -- much smaller, but worked the same. Granted, I wasn't BF'ing, but it sure took up a lot less space.

I fed B and bottle during take-off and landing and he was fine. He slept most of the flight. I would also suggest making sure DD has layers on so that you can dress her accordingly. I find that planes are either super hot or freezing cold.

As far as security goes, I had no problems bringing RTF formula, so I imagine it'd be the same for you and BM in bottles. I just made sure I had the bottles out of my bag so they could be clearly identified.

I had an infant carrier and stroller that I gate checked as well.

    GL!

  • I would just nurse on take off and landing and if she takes a paci have it handy in case she isn't hungry at those times.  We brought M's birth certificate (certified copy) and needed it at check-in at the airport (Southwest), but not after that.  I'd bring a wrap or sling for on the plane if you don't want to keep her in the Bjorn the whole flight.  We flew when M was 6 months and we got a free seat for her on the way there which was nice since we brought her infant seat.  On the way back she was in my lap as the flight was full and I just held her.  She slept the whole flight each way.  It would've given my arms a break if I had the Moby back then. :)  Otherwise, maybe bring a couple rattles or teethers in case she isn't asleep to entertain her a bit.

ETA: I didn't bring breastmilk on the way there, but pumped and brought some home.  I just froze it at the hotel and had it on ice in my Medela cooler in my checked bag.  It was still frozen solid when we landed.

  • We're flying Wednesday night. The babies are a little younger and not into toys, but we are bringing pumped milk (enough for the flight/travel + a little cushion) and copies of their birth certificates (we have 2). I'm hoping it goes well.

ETA: we're borrowing a PNP there, are skipping the monitor, and we're bringing the sound machine. We usually use cloth but are using disposables for the trip to limit our luggage and I plan to buy them there. (We have plenty of clothes and bottles to bring, hah)

  • Whenever I wear N in the Ergo they tell me as I am getting in the plane the baby cannot be attached to me during take off and landings. So just be aware of that with the Bijorn. Wearing the baby does make things easier, and you don't have to to worry about the stroller. I never had an issue with BM and I went on a business trip where I pumped so I was traveling sans baby and had bottles. TSA for the most part is pretty good. It never hurts to have a copy of the regs with you, just in case. Also, bring a copy of the birth certificate. Southwest is the ONLY airline where we have been asked for proof, but it doesn't hurt to have it.

I ditto nurse/feed on take-off/landing, skip bring the monitor, buy diapers when you get there, more then likely she will nap while flying, if not have an few little rattles/toys to keep her entertained, bring an extra outfit for her and shirt for you.

Good luck, I am sure it will go smoothly!

  • Thanks Ladies! That is a great idea Heather about the cooler in my checked luggage. I don't plan to pump to feed her but I have been pumping with just a medela hand pump at night (I leave the big one at work) to get a few more ounces to begin going towards a store, since I had so many problems off the bat we don't have any. So I was hoping to still do that while we are gone. I will throw the moby in the diaper bag although she doesn't love it. DH is going as well so I will have an extra set of hands. We are flying southwest so I knew about the birth certificate, I also paid for early bird check in so that we are guaranteed in group A so we can pick where we want to sit.

I have been debating about the diapers, I was just going to initially going to buy when we got there but I know that we will be coming home with lots of clothes (my grandmother is a shopper and loves to buy baby girl clothes) that we aren't going with so I don't think that they will take up space that we won't get filled up again. I haven't decided yet though.
