Providence to Worcester?

Hi all,

My job is in Worcester and my hubby's is in Prov, so I commute about an hour (on a good day) from RI to Worcester. However, we've recently been considering moving move in between/closer to Worcester and I was wondering if any of you had any thoughts or suggestions.

Uxbridge, MA is a nice town, we've heard, but so is Millbury & Sutton. Any other ideas? The drive is really starting to drive me nuts and his schedule is flexible enough (unlike mine) to avoid rush hour.

ANY advice is appreciated :)

Re: Providence to Worcester?

  • I don't know the MA towns as well, but anything along the Route 146 stretch in RI is probably going to be an improvement on your commute.  Where we are in Lincoln (about 2 miles from the Breakneck Hill Rd exit) is exactly 1/2 hour to the Mass Pike.
  • I agree with pp, any town along 146 would be easy on both of you.  Uxbridge, Millbury, Northborough, are all nice.

  • You are talking my neck of the woods! We bought a house in Sutton 6 years ago. Love our neighborhood. We are located about a mile from 146, just 3 miles south of 90. We have friends in Uxbridge and the surrounding towns. We go to church in Linwood. Most of the towns around here are nice. I'd be more than happy to try and help you out, even though I am a transplant myself!

  • Most people have recommended Sutton & Millbury to me, but I don't know much about either place! What's Sutton like? How far are you from Providence? Any idea if there are rentals in the area?

Any info would be appreciated. Thank you so much :)

  • Sutton has a small town feel. Schools are good (elementary and middle, especially, MS is being renovated... A lot of the high school kids go to the regional tech school or elsewhere for high school). The library runs several programs for families throughout the year, and we've just started to take advantage if them.

I'm right off a main road, but my kids can play in the yard with me really worrying (although they are young and I am always there with them). It is a bit more rural than neighboring Millbury, but not a whole lot. There are some farms, some protected lands (Purgatory Chasm is in Sutton), as well as higher developed areas with condos and apartments. I am sure there are rentals, whether they are apartments or houses I am unsure, but I don't really look out for rentals when I am driving around town. It takes about 40 minutes from my house to get to Providence driving 146, but you have both lights to contend with. There are areas in Sutton that are south if the light at Boston Rd that would bypass that traffic signal and would take between 30-40 minutes to get to Providence when traffic is moving.

  • Since Alicia and I are neighbors I can chime in. I live in Grafton, MA which is a 10 minute drive to 146. It takes me 30 minutes to get to Cumberland and 40 to get to Providence. 146 is usually a really good drive. Grafton is beautiful with a great school system and our high school is being renovated as we speak. I am specifically in North Grafton...1 mile from the mass pike. Let me know if you have any other questions!

  • Wow, I didn't realize that Grafton was only a 40 minute drive to Providence! That's excellent news. Do either of you know of any Realtors in the Millbury/Grafton/Sutton area? I think it would be beneficial for us to drive through some of those towns. Are there restaurants in these areas? Good grocery shopping options?

Thank you so much for your help... it's tough to be new to an area and not know many people, so I really appreciate it :)

  • Our buyer's realtor was out of Worcester and took us all around the towns, but we were looking in the areas between the Mass Pike, 495 and 395. Marcia Kringle from Remax Advantage http://www.remaxadvantage.com. I think she either moved it retired though. The other agents in that office that we happened to deal with on a couple occasions were nice too.

As for restaurants, there is Tony's Sutton Pizza right at the light in 146. A few smaller diners that do breakfast. A couple places (subs/pizza and Chinese) deliver here including A&D Pizza in Millbury, and Pearl Cafe in Millbury, and Family Wok in Northbridge. In the Shoppes at Blackstone Valley in Millbury (what I refer to as the Mall on the Mountain) there are several restaurants: Applebees, TGIFridays, LongHorn, Uno's, Q'doba, Red Robin, Quiznos, Panera, and Cold Stone Creamery. A bit further north on 146 in the plaza with Walmart is an Olive Garden. There are a few restaurants on 122 in Grafton. When we go out or pick up takeout, we sometimes venture into Shrewsbury or Worcester. My husband went to school in Worcester and worked in the Marlboro area for years, so we are still more familiar with those areas.

Groceries: There is a Stop&Shop in Grafton, Shaws in Northbridge, Hannafords in Uxbridge, Market Basket in Oxford, PriceChopper in Auburn (I think), Gorettis in Millbury, Trader Joes in Shrewsbury, and Wegmans is opening in Northborough this weekend. There are more places around too. I get fish from a place in Worcester/Grafton, meat from a place in Worcester.... The Target and Walmart on 146 both have markets, with Walmart's being larger... There are lots of dairy farms and produce farms in the area too.

  • Thanks again for all of the great advice. One last question - are there any areas in these towns that have a "neighborhood" type feel? If so, where? That's what we would like to find if at all possible. Again, thanks for all of your suggestions and advice! :)

  • I'm still too new myself to be able to comment on specific areas. But, I know that there are lots of little developments in these towns. My street (and I think Pam's too) has block parties. We've had an annual pig roast 3 years now. The small streets and cul-de-sacs open themselves up to more neighborhood dynamics. There are only 6 houses on my street, and we know all our neighbors, except one who keeps to himself. Across the main road from where I am are several subdevelopments and condos/townhouses. There are definitely areas where you might not really see your neighbors, but I think with a realtor guiding you, you should have better luck in narrowing down locale.
