Living on base + Dual military BAH

DH and I are dual military and we currently live off base which has us pocketing all of my BAH and his is used on rent. We are scheduled to PCS early next year and I have begun to look at houses in the area to get an idea of what we will be paying. A home that has the amount of rooms that we want in the area would take all of my bah, his bah and then some so I am seriously considering living on base. How does the BAH thing work? When I ask around some say his will be taken in full and mine half and some say only his will be taken bc he outranks me. Can anyone fill me in? Thanks

  • I replied to your post on MF. What areas have you considered? What size house are you looking for? Housing in this area is expensive, but I'm surprised that it would cost y'all *that* much. When we looked for housing, we had a few things on our "must have" list--like a garage, a backyard (fenced-in preferred) and a basement. Well, we have a basement. We opted to give on the other two because the location of our townhouse is fabulous. DH has an easy commute (which is, IMO, golden in this area) and our LO loves the hustle and bustle of our neighborhood.

Sorry that I can't answer your question directly. My suggestion would be to call or email the housing office at the post you are interested in.

Are you sure you're looking at the correct BAH rates?  Unless you're limiting yourself to one of the super expensive neighborhoods (like McLean) I'm with Smudge's that your rent shouldn't be that high.

  • At our base, with privatized housing through Lincoln, it works as follows, "If more than one service member in a family is receiving a BAH, the higher of the two BAHs with dependants will be used to pay for housing and the second BAH will remain for the family's use."

I don't think it's always the case though, so I'd check with your specific housing office.

I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.
  • If the base housing is not privatized, they will take both of your BAHs. If base housing is privatized, they take BAH from the higher ranking individual. None of our bases have had privatized housing, so we've never strongly considered living on base. We don't have kids, so we only qualify for the smallest floor plans and there's no way I'm dropping two SSgt BAHs on that.

Wow, Ojo, I wouldn't have lived on base either, if that were the case.

OP, Fort Belvoir housing is privatized. In May 2010, my DH was not allowed to get on the wait list at Belvoir until AFTER he'd signed into his unit. It varies from post to post. Some, like Belvoir, make you wait until the service member signs into their unit, others, like Fort Lee, allow you to get on the wait list when the service member receives orders. Things may have changed, but I would be very surprised.

If you have any questions, I'm happy to help. I lived here (in Falls Church and Alexandria) for 8 years before meeting and marrying my DH. We've been back in Alexandria since May 2010. I have ever only lived in Virginia, so I'm biased and limited in that way. But, I'm happy to help as best I can.

  • It really does depend upon what the on-base situation is, like others have said. If it's government housing, then both BAHs are gone.  In privatized housing, however, every company has its own policy.  On base where we are, they would take the higher BAH plus half of the lower BAH.  Even so, based on our ranks, we could never qualify for a house as large (or as nice) on base than what we are getting off base.  (Our house off base is significantly larger than O-5 and E-9 housing on base.) We chose to stay off base because our house is much larger and nicer. You really have to weigh several elements (besides just cost) to make that decision.
