BR: Please Help!

I had a baby shower a couple of weekends ago and got a lot of wonderful items!  However, I didn't get a lot of clothes.  I have separated what I do have by sizes and am wondering if some of you moms or soon to be moms will let me know around what I need for the baby's arrival.  He will be born in December, but TX weather can be reaaaaaly weird.  A couple of years ago we were wearing shorts on Christmas Day (complete bummer!) and last year we couldn't be bundled up enough.  The coldest months of the year for us are Jan and Feb (which would be in the 0-3 month category).

I guess my question is what and how many items do you think I need? Big Smile TIA!

Re: BR: Please Help!

  • I would stick with long sleeved onesies and add pants if he needs them.  Babies can't control their temps like adults do so they are usually cooler.  A nurse at the hospital when Parker was born said that they typically need to have one more layer than you have one.  For example, if you are in shorts and a t-shirt, he probably would be comfortable in long sleeves and pants.  Does that make sense?

Yup total sense.  I was just wondering if you experienced a lot of changing of clothes.  If I should expect to purchase like 10 pairs of pants or just stick with 5 and rewash?  I'm just trying to see what else I need to buy and what I could pass on.

  • I think it all depends.  Parker didn't spit up at all so I wasn't changing him constantly because of that.  Some of it will be trial and error so if I was you I might just get a handful for now and then once he is born and you figure things out a little more you can increase his closet if needed.

I'm not much help because we didn't have to buy many clothes because my nephew was born almost exactly a year earlier and my sister gave me all of his clothes.

  • What I loved was the sleepers-Especially for the first 3 months.

I would put onesies under the sleeper as well.

I would probably get 10 sleepers,3-5 fleece ones, and at least 5 cotton ones...depending on your weather of course.

I think I'm good go to then.  I hit up a neighborhood yard sale a couple of weekends ago and really got lucky with the sleepers.

  • I agree, long sleeved onesies and sleepers in the 0-3 and 3-6 size (especially if the doctors think that baby is going to be on the big side). By one month old in the middle of January Wyatt was already outgrowing his 0-3 clothes (which is funny, because he's still in 3-6 for the most part). You might want a few warmer pieces in the bigger size just in case you have colder weather than expected, or if he outgrows them too fast.

  • My nephew was born in December and pretty much lived in fleece sleepers for the first 3 months or so!  I bet you'll get more clothing as gifts once he is born too.

  • Julia lived in the the sleep n play pajamas from carters for the first 3 months of her life (Jan, Feb, March).  I highly recommend them.  Also lots of long sleeve onesies, pants, and socks.

  • I wouldn't go out and buy too much right now because you won't really know what size he will be at first.  We are still in newborn sized clothes (and I don't have much, but luckily can rotate through doing laundry only every other day or so).  My mom actually had to go out and get a couple of "preemie" size clothes that were up to 7 lbs because even the newborn stuff was huge on her when she first came home.

Right now I am loving footed sleepers.  Mackenzie is a super warm baby so I worry more about overheating her than her being cold.  She also wears a lot of short sleeve diaper shirts and pants with socks, but that's only because I don't have enough sleepers.  The one piece sleeper with a zipper, is the easiest piece of clothing for a baby!

And I was also told that the baby should have one more layer than you.  So whatever you are wearing, plus a sweater or a blanket on top.

  • Keep in mind, babies have different sizes. For example, when my one niece was born, she wore 0-3 months for a couple of weeks and then was already in 3-6 months in no time.. whereas my nephew was the opposite and was smaller... just an fyi... I know a lot of my mom friends complained that they got so many 0-3 and 3-6 that they couldn't even use them all before they were outgrown. Just a thought.
  • What Crystal said, we were going thru the clothes we had and had many conversations that were like the following: "Did he wear this?" and the answer was either "Yeah, once." or "Nope"

KR was in newborn/0-3 for 3 weeks, 3-6 til 3 months etc.

He's 7 months old now and in 12-18 months

For this reason I am nervous to remove any tags I have on the clothes that we did receive.  I'm sure I'll be fine and I'm just overthinking the small things. :)

  • I agree with PP. If you can wait until after he is born and you can always go purchase a few things if you find you need them. My mother ran out and got a few newborn things because we didn't have any and he was swimming in 0-3 even though he was 8lbs14oz.

  • Natalie is 3 mo old and still in newborn size for most things. She can wear some 0-3 mo clothes but most are still big on her.

Granted, I had a preemie so that probably won't be your situation, but I thought I'd chime in.

I also second onsies and sleepers. She pretty much lives in onsies and socks unless we go out. Now that it's getting colder I have started to look for warmer outfits, but I really only have 3 or 4 actual outfits that she goes out of the house in. Occasionally I'll add a pair of pants if its cold in the house, but normally I'll just keep her sleeper on her the whole day.

I also don't have problems with her spitting up, so changing her outfit throughout the day usually only happens once.

I do laundry for her twice a week and have yet to run out of clothes for her - but I have a TON of onsies. You can also layer long sleeve onsies under short sleeve ones to make them last longer.

    Hope this helps! =)

  • I think most people already covered the basics, but don't forget to get a few hats. Even if it's warm, you're going to want your newborn in a hat.

Some of my favorite cool weather clothes were: LS onesies, footed pants, zutano booties, button up or zip up hoodies.

Also, I would totally recommend sleeper gowns. I loved them for A. We had him in the gowns until he was 6 months.

Don't buy too much for clothing, as other have said, you have no idea what size LO will be. A was 7 lb 8 oz, but by 4 days old he was down to 6 lb 2 oz and in preemie clothing, swimming in newborn. He was also in newborn clothing for about 2.5 months. Now, he's 16 months and in size 2t-3t clothing.

  • Someone touched on this but I highly recommend if you buy feetie pjs... but the ones with a zipper not the ones with snaps. Seriously, the zipper ones are so much easier to get on and zipped. The snaps take forever, I always snapped them wrong. At night it was so nice to just have a zipper when I was sleep deprived.

  • Thanks everyone.  I feel much better after reading these posts.  I think we're pretty much covered and I'll just ask for bigger sizes from here on out.
