saw that you are going to NYC this weekend and since i know you & DH are fellow beer lovers, i wanted to suggest marshall stack. it's our absolute favorite bar in nyc (possibly anywhere). really good beer on tap and awesome bar snacks (like blue cheese garlic bread!). this is where we've had most of our b-day parties since 2008.

sounds like a fun day!! going between brooklyn & columbia will likely take up a good chunk of the day. would you believe that we've never been to brooklyn brewery even though we both lived in the city for 10 years. for shame, i know!
there's a beer garden in/near the standard hotel in the meatpacking district. i haven't been but it's definitely a hip spot. if you have time, i'd go have a drink in the bar at the standard. awesome views of the city, especially at sunset. you can make a reservation on opentable and it's expensive but worth the view.
an extra hint: happy hour at marshall stack is 4-7, $2 off all beer on tap
