WWYD? Dog/Neighbor

We have some backyard neighbors (our yards are diagonal to each other if that makes sense?) have a sheltie named Rain. I know the neighbor because she used to be the best groomer at Petsmart but then she went to another place that costs a fortune and is only open 10am to 5pm so I had to stop using her.

Anyway, the dog is maybe 2? This dog barks nonstop. At first I thought it was just when they let her out, but now I realize that if I have even one window open in my house, I hear her barking from inside all.day.long.

Maybe like 6 months ago I ran into the owner who asked if I hear the dog barking a lot - I said, well, when she's out in the yard yeah, but we're really never home so I couldn't say. She said she got a horrible note from someone saying that she needed to shut that dog up or else and she was really upset.

I mentioned the note to our next door neighbor (his yard directly abuts Rain's yard) and he said he's not surprised as the dog barks nonstop (his wife is home all day with the kids).

Anyway, now that I'm going to be home with baby I'm pretty sure this is going to drive me mad. The owner told me they keep her in a bedroom all day and apparently she just barks constantly. Stella hears her and will perk up and run to that corner of the yard but NEVER barks back.

Would you say something or just try to ignore it?

Re: WWYD? Dog/Neighbor

  • I'd say something, especially with a newborn that is going to have to sleep.

That would probably drive me batty. Also, the dog barking all day long can't be good for the dog either, right?

Maybe you can record it for her, so she knows what is going on (maybe she just doesn't think it is that bad)

  • I think since the owner previously approached you, you can mention it to her when you start hearing it. Its weird she barks all day long though. We had a sheltie grow up and she barked at everything - passing cars, etc, but not just for the heck of it.

fwiw, the baby won't care for a few months. one of my mom's dogs (the min pin of fabled stories) barks a lot. basically every time he hears my mom take a step (like in the morning when she's still upstairs - they're crated downstairs), a door, etc and he's freaking loud. the babies are just now starting to jump a little at it (not walking up yet) and its in the same house.

  • yeah, I need to catch her and mention that I'm home more now and I do hear Rain barking all the time. I don't know what it is about. I'm actually not worried about the baby, I'm worried about my own sanity! I love to sit in our sunroom and read and it is so annoying that the dog just constantly barks.

    Good ideas ladies though...

  • I agree. If when you get home with the baby you find the dog barking all the time I'd say something. It sounds like she trusts you so if you approach it in a nice way she might actually try to do something about it.

  • I agree with others, since you were previously approached by the owner, I would feel comfortable telling her that you are home more often now and noticed how often the dog really does bark.

Just a side note: Shelties are high energy dogs, so it could be possible that she isn't getting enough exercise, thus she is resorting to barking to get out her excess energy. (although so dogs are just barkers)

    GL!

  • I would definitely say something esp since you will be at home with a newborn soon.

We had an issue with our neighbor a few years ago where she worked at night at ahem....a gentleman's club and the dog would bark non stop from 10 pm to when she got home (around 4 am). We left her notes and even spoke to her and told her (politely) about it. She apologized and made sure the dog was taken care of while she was at work.  This dog was a hyper pomeranian so I am sure it was b/c she was cooped up all night long by herself.

I now hate pomeranians b/c of this.
