Baby Clothing Question

I know this will probably depend on a lot of different factors but how much of each size clothing did you use/would you recommend having?

We have a 2 or 3 onesies and sleepers in each size and I know I will need more but I have no idea how much more.  This is so overwhelming!

Re: Baby Clothing Question

  • I would stick with what you have and then reassess after your baby shower if you're having one.  You may get a lot of clothes and not need to buy more.  The book Baby Bargains had a good breakdown of the basic clothes you need.

I think we had about 5 onesies in each size, at least 5 sleepers (in 0-3), and then various little layette outfits.  Those gowns that cinch at the bottom are good in the beginning too.  We basically had Tommy in sleepers all the time and only used actual outfits if we took him out somewhere.

ETA:  I didn't want to have to worry about laundry so I probably had close to 15 sleepers.  They all got used.   I also had a May baby so I wasn't using a onesie under every outfit because his sleepers were long sleeved.  He also didn't really have blow outs so he didn't require multiple outfits per day.

  • When milo was a newborn he lived in sleepers. I'd say 6-10 would be ideal. When never had diaper failure though but when changing him he would pee on us and his clothes sometimes.

Once I started dressing him for real, I found that I was picky about outfits so he has about 5 pair of pants I like and another 3 that are Ok. We have about ten onesies/ shirts in rotation.

Also when he was a newborn I hated anything that had to be pulled over the head that didn't have a wide neck.

  • I try to keep at least 10 of everything assuming I wash DC's clothes once a week.

  • DD lives in sleepers and we probably have about 10-15 in 0-3mos and 3mos. I have so many onesies since it seems that is what I received most of at my shower.

She was 9 lb when born and at 5 weeks is about 12 lbs so she skipped right over newborn and into 0-3/3mos. I will re-evaluate the bigger sizes as she grows.

  • I used the baby bargains book. I made sure to have the following in advance of his birth.

    6 longsleeve side snap tees

    3 swaddle sets

6 short sleeve, 6 long sleeved onesies (prob too many)

    3-4 sleep saks

    6 sleepers

    12 booties/socks

3 hats (every NB gift comes with these now)

    1 coming home outfit

I didn't stock up beyond that (and still don't really) as you don't know how fast baby will grow. Shower gifts and hand me downs got me through the first couple of months.  And whatever you don't have on hand you can easily purchase once baby's here. Or buy online at diapers.com or amazon mom for next day/2 day delivery.

I've mistakenly purchased clothes to "stock up" and he outgrew the size before the season hit.

  • I had my daughter in January. She lived in footed sleepers. I never had enough of them.  Bonus if they zipped up.

In addition to what others said, for me I found that b/c it was winter I got annoyed with footless items. Her damnn socks always fell off.

I personally wouldn't stock up on much past nb, 0-3 and maybe a little 3-6.  Change of season has to be considered. Also, my kid was in 6 month clothing for like a day.

  • This is all we use right now:

    Short sleeve NB onsee's

Long sleeve footed sleep and plays

    Gowns

He wears the gowns at night with a onsee under it so changing his diaper is easy. He wears the sleep and play footies all day because they are really comfortable.

I'd say we go through maybe 2 sleep and plays, once in a while 3, and 1-2 gowns a night. New onsee goes on every time we change his outfit based on spit up/wetting through etc. So it depends how often you want to do laundry. Ditto LD about socks falling off. I have zero zip up onsee's though, and now am interested in them!!!

We bought exclusively zip up sleep and plays after awhile.  In the middle of the night it is a million times easier to zip up an outfit than try and figure out 15 snaps.  They are harder to find when they are little, now Emma is in 9-12 it's almost exclusively zip up.  She still wears them to bed.
