Dallas-Fort Worth Nesties
Dear Community,

Our tech team has launched updates to The Nest today. As a result of these updates, members of the Nest Community will need to change their password in order to continue participating in the community. In addition, The Nest community member's avatars will be replaced with generic default avatars. If you wish to revert to your original avatar, you will need to re-upload it via The Nest.

If you have questions about this, please email help@theknot.com.

Thank you.

Note: This only affects The Nest's community members and will not affect members on The Bump or The Knot.

Volunteer Opportunities

I would like to do some volunteering. I am not really closed to anything although I would prefer not to drive 40 miles or something to get to the volunteer site (I am in NW Fort Worth.) That being said, I am looking for some suggestions. I know about volunteermatch, but I know there are also a lot of word of mouth oppurtunites as well.

Anything you've done and loved? Anything you've wanted to do but don't have time? Any suggestions at all?

Re: Volunteer Opportunities

  • I am interested to see the responses!

I always wanted to do Habitat for Humanity, but I could never find anyone who wanted to do it.  Then when I decided I would do it alone, I went to sign up and pretty much every time slot when I could attend was full.  For MONTHS.

  • I use to volunteer at Christ Haven for kids when I was younger up until I graduated HS.  It was a lot of fun.  There is some manual labor but there is also just hanging out with the kids and being a friend.  Our company now does a big clean up every 6 months out there and I haven't gotten to go the last few times.  You can check out the website.

  • I volunteered with Communities in School for 2 years and loved it.  I only stopped because of my current job, not because I didn't like it or anything.

I really wanted to volunteer with the Gladney Adoption center but the commute was just too much.

What kind of volunteer positions are there at Gladney?

  • I volunteer at Senior Source.  I volunteer for the Money Management program, but there are several other programs, if you don't want to do the money management program. I volunteer at the one in Dallas, but I'm sure there's some type of Senior Citizens program in Ft. Worth.

I also volunteer for the YWCA through the FPA.  DH also volunteers for the YWCA.  He teaches financial literacy classes, but I'm sure there are other things to do, as well.

Soon, I will also be volunteering for the Boys and Girls Club.  I'll be teaching financial literacy classes, but again, I'm sure they have a need for other areas.  I used to volunteer for B&G Club when I was in college and there are several opportunities there.

My friend works for CASA and they are always needing volunteers.  Good volunteers, during the work day.  She works in McKinney, so I'm not sure if there is a CASA program in Ft. Worth or not.

ETA: I volunteered a lot in college, so there's also:

Ronald McDonald House - they always need people to come in and cook dinner/make snacks/clean for the residents.

Food Bank: We always volunteered right before the holidays to help put together the holiday boxes.

    I'll keep thinking of more...

Absolutely no idea :/  It was awhile back.

    ETA: Found it!

Gladney Center for Adoption ? Is looking for women 23 and over to work with birthmoms in their maternity home on campus. These are weekend opportunities and re between 2-4 hours in length. Some example would be going to the
movies, a Rangers game, taking a trip to the mall, etc. The volunteer would be the point person on the activity and would be providing transportation, and Gladney covers the costs. Training is required. For more information contact
    (817) 922-5996

This is an updated version of what I used when looking when I was in school.

I have a friend-of-a-friend who works at Gladney... if you're interested, I can put you in touch with her!

  • I volunteer at Keller's public library.  I am very passionate about the library and the service they provide so I chose to give them my time.  It is more solitary than the other opportunities suggested, but I think that is why I liked it.  Alphabetizing, shelving and sorting is therapeutic to me after 5 days at my 8to5!

I noticed you have a doggie in your siggy. What about at a shelter?  They always are in need of help. You could try the pets board. There are several DFW area nesties over there.

That's the other one!  I volunteer for Paws in the City.  But, I think that's Dallas only.

  • I just realized the answer to my question is literally right in front of me. The book club book this month is based in Fort Worth. The Union Gospel Mission is exactly the kind of work I'd like to do. :)

  • Just a few other things to add.  I volunteer with the Labrador rescue group.  I know there is a rescue for Great Danes, as well as other non-breed specific rescue groups.

My mom and I just signed up to take an "introduction to volunteering" class for the Children's hospital.  I'm really excited about this!

  • Shameless plug for my group - Legacy Boxer Rescue! We are super fun and have saved over 2000 dogs in just 7 years. There is opportunity no matter what your abilities are - I foster dogs until they find their forever homes, but there's lots of other jobs for those who can't take on dogs in their home. Some others include helping evaluate dogs in need of foster care, driving dogs to appointments if their foster parents are busy, working on our website or other online activities (which I love because I can do this while at work and still feel like I'm contributing) and several others as well.
