Re: I finally watched "Up All Night"

  • I've casually flipped through 2 episodes and I can't get into it. I don't think it will make it much longer. It's a shame - I love Will Arnett but he just can't seem to get cast in a good sitcom. I gave up on Running Wilde after a few episodes.
  • We canned it too after 3 episodes.

  • I watched an episode two or three weeks ago and thought it was HILARIOUS and loved it.  Then I watched it last night and thought it was depressing and very mommy-war-ish, so to speak.

So I'm giving it a few more chances. If every week its a different mommy war, no thank you.  but if it reverts to being funny and charming like the first episode I saw I'll be a real fan I think.

I love christina applegate though so she's really making the show for me.

  • I have loved Christina Applegate since Married With Children days so I did try to watch one episode of this. I could not relate to it whatsoever and didn't laugh. I just thought it was totally unrepresentative of life with a baby and that they were trying too hard. I may give it another shot-who knows.

ITA - and what's even weirder is that all the main actors are new parents too, so I thought oh, this will be cute, but NOPE

and ditto the Mommy War aspect was REALLY unappealing and didn't ring true to me at all.

  • I actually watched it twice and I couldn't stand it anymore. I deleted it from the DVR. It just wasn't really that funny and parts of the show I actually cringed.

The commericals make it seem very new-parent-oriented and we figured since we are new parents that it would be right up our alley. But the whole Ava/partying angle is unappealing and out of place it seems.

Also, to be fair, this was the first episode that had something mommy-war-ish in it, but it was unappealing. I had to explain the mommy wars to DH and he asked me to please not get involved. Lol, um no problem, those mommies are psycho!

  • I saw last nights episode, and I found it depressing. It reminded me why it sucks to be the only friend without kids (not that I don't get that reminder daily IRL). I don't want to identify with Maya Rudolph, but I do.

Whitney, on the other hand. Saw that for the first time last night and could not stop laughing.

  • I only watched the first episode and have to agree with Mrs Remy. I hated it, which is too bad because the commercials made it look so good and I love Christina Applegate and Will Arnett.

  • It wont make it. I dont think it can figure out its target audience or get a good plot line going. After last night I decided not to watch it anymore, DVR is too full anyway.

We really wanted to like that show - esp since it was done by the same people as Arrested Development.  A few episodes were funny but it was very tedious watching the entire 2 DVDs.  I think we missed maybe the last 2 episodes because we were bored of it.  It was the same jokes each episode.

Yeah, I have to agree here--parts of it really ring true but there's identifying with a character and then there's being depressed by an exaggerated version of your own circumstance.  I feel like for some people, that's the Ava character and for others that's the Mommy-war aspect.  As someone who is currently the only friend without kids but thinking about joining the club, both situations are just depicted in a sad and annoying way by that show.

As for last night's show, I was really hoping someone would eventually rally against being called "So-in-so's mom" or against the obnoxious baby class leader and inject a little reality.  But it never happened which was really disappointing.

  • Can someone explain what Mommy War is?  I've not heard that term.
  • mommy wars = Stay at Home Moms and Working Moms hate each other and each feels the other is a bad parent for her choice and raising kids the wrong way and this will lead/is leading to the downfall of civilized society.

I thought Mommy Wars was a broader term and included formula feeding vs. breastfeeding, cloth diapering vs. disposable, CIO vs. attachment parenting......no? Basically both sides thinking their way is better.

  • I watched it a few times too and am not a fan but it's okay...Will Arnett will soon have to work on another season of Arrested Development and this makes me incredibly happy!

oh yeah, all that too - I guess just everything in mommy/parenting is up for debate and everybody thinks everybody else is doing it wrong.

thanks agin for expressing what I wanted to say better than I did. :) it's even more depressing when you don't ever want to join the ranks of the mommy army. I feel like a total social pariah, and it blows.
  • I don't love it and I don't hate it. It's somewhat entertaining but if I miss and episode or don't set the DVR I'm not gonna lose sleep over it (pun intended). I bet it doesn't get renewed after this season.

Yeah this is what I think it is.   I have seen it start from both sides (these are very common on the bump and on the nest and frequently copied/pasted). It usually goes like this:

"Are you planning to FF or BF?"

"I think I'm going to try BF - it's important to me."

"I was formula fed and I'm fine so I'm going to FF my baby."

"Formula has INGREDIENTS and is bad.  If you love your child you will BF them."

"I tried BFing but it was so hard and stressful that I stopped. Happy mom = happy baby" (that term must arise at least once in a mommy war discussion.)

"A REAL mother keeps going no matter how hard it is. My baby is worth it" (that phrase must also arise at least once.)

"did you try ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUWXYZ to make BFing easier?"

    "No - I only tried A - J and that was enough."

"ITS NEVER ENOUGH FOR YOUR BABY!"

so you can see how it derails (and also how you could apply that same conversation to almost any parenting decision like mrsremy described.)  I think the term started bc women (and men) take parenting decisions very personally, which makes sense, but its not always an attack - saying you plan to BF doesn't mean you think all formula feeders are evil, and saying you plan to FF doesn't mean you don't understand the benefits of BFing. But if something is right for Kathryn's family it could be hard for Kathryn to get why it's not right for Daisy's family unless Daisy is saying Kathryn's way is wrong so you can see how it starts.

(clearly just using K & D for hypos.)

Obviously a good deal of women in the world are capable of discussing parenting decisions without it becoming a mommy war issue. But I think on these boards things can deteriorate pretty fast and its made me very aware of it IRL.

  • That's way too much drama!  I am glad all I need to worry about is weather my cats will get dry or wet food today.

LOL I mainly see it on the boards. You can always find a mommy war going on somewhere.

Maybe some of the moms on here can say how much it happens IRL. My SIL makes lots of mommy war-like comments but only to me, I'm not sure how much she does it to other moms.

  • I watched the first episodes through last night's, and after I watched last night's, i removed it from my DVR.

I love Christina Applegate and I so wanted to love this series, but I couldn't get into it. The first episode was the most amusing for me, but beyond that, it hasn't been laugh-out-loud for me. And last night's episode just ticked me off. Mommy Wars are a hot button issue for me.

  • I've watched all the episodes on demand when there was nothing else on but football on Sunday afternoons. However, I'm very disappointed in it (I LOVE christina Applegate), and won't be sad if it's canceled.
