Popping in about relocation, talk to me about traffic

I may be relocating to the area.  H would be commuting to Boston, I'd be working in Warwick.  We are trying to start a conversation about house rentals and where we'd live.  H would need to be able to access the commuter rail.

Where do you think you'd live in this situation?  We have a baby and 2 large dogs, so we aren't really thinking we'd do a loft or even an apartment.  We would like to rent a house.

  • You'll have a lot of options, really, so you can pick the sort of neighborhood you want (rural, suburban, urban are all possible). The commuter rail into Boston was just extended to reach Warwick, although not all trains start here. You can get on there, in Providence, or in South Attleboro, MA. A few more trains start in Providence, so there are more options depending on what time he needs to be to work.

Warwick is mostly suburbs and lots of single family homes. The train stop is at the airport (a small airport, so no traffic associated with it) and I haven't had to park there, but there are lots of garages so I can't imagine parking to be a problem, but I don't know about cost. I like living in the Warwick area a lot.

Providence (in Downtown close to the train station) is definitely city and most places are apartments, row houses, or duplexes. Parking for the train is a pain, so if you don't live walking distance, I'd probably not count on taking the train from there each day.

South Attleboro is a mix. There are built up areas, but some of the neighboring towns are very small and rural and most places are houses. Not sure how many are rentals, though, and most are more expensive, large homes. I know lots of people that drive to S. Attleboro and take the train in. Parking there is not an issue and pretty cheap, I think.

Traffic doesn't really get that bad except on occasion with a really bad accident. You could commute from South Attleboro to Warwick in 30-40 minutes. I'd probably be more concerned with getting a location close to his desired commuter rail stop because his train ride will be long enough as it is.

  • Hello! I'd this I'd probably look in Pawtucket, RI or one of the Attleboros in MA.  They're close to the commuter rail stations in South Attleboro or Attleboro but not too bad of a drive to Warwick on 95.

Or you could look in Woonsocket, RI or Bellingham/Franklin, MA.  There's another commuter rail line with stops in Franklin. About the same ride to Warwick.

I live in Woonsocket.  It doesn't have a great reputation, but I feel like you can get a lot for your money and there are some really nice areas.  Pawtucket is very similar in that there are some run-down areas but some safe and pleasant neighborhoods.  I worked in Warwick before switching jobs and it was an easy 30 minute commute from Woonsocket, and I took the train to Boston from Franklin a few times for meetings and that was easy.

If you need anything else, let us know! I've always lived here, but I imagine it must be difficult to plan to relocate without having any inside info on an area, especially with a baby and dogs! (I relate to the baby and dogs part!)

  • You can also find some nice apartments( if you are looking to rent- buying is much more expensive) on the East Side ( Providence) there are beautiful neighborhoods and lots to do within walking distance .
  • If you want something suburby, you could probably find a single family home for rent in Lincoln or Cumberland, which would put you within 5-7 miles of the South Attleboro station and close to Route 295, which would give you some Warwick commuting options (ie, you could avoid Route 95 if you wanted).
  • You are coming out this way!  I have missed your D&R updates.  North Attleboro is nice and Attleboro is OK, too.  It wouldn't be a bad commute to Warwick and like PP mentioned, the S.Attleboro commuter rail would be useful if your H has to go to Boston.

  • I'd say Lincoln! You can access the highways easily (from most spots), there are homes for rent, good schools & 15m to attleboro train and providence.
