BR: Diaper Rashes

What product/concoction have you found works best for diaper rashes? Before we found out Gabby was allergic to milk, she started to get a bad diaper rash (common with milk allergies). We tried Desitin (both reg. strength & the 40% zinc oxide/max strength) but neither work. I also tried putting the Desitin on and then some baby power to help "set" it (recommended by a pharmacist).

I had her airing out for about 10-15 minutes today until she decided to go both #1 & #2 on her tummy time mat. Oh & ever since the rash started,  I have been using just wet napkins when I change her instead of wipes.

What have you found works on diaper rashes?

Re: BR: Diaper Rashes

  • I've heard of MoneyButt Powder -- a mother at BRU raved about it, so I tried it for Sam for a bit... it actually made her rash worse because I think she was irritated by the calomine lotion it contained.

But other than that, yeah we've just been using max strength Desitin after airing dry-patting dry with a towel.  That and time.

Also, our pedi suggested not using wipes, but rather just a wet paper towel.  When we do use wipes, we use senstive unscented just to be sure.

Other than that, it might be the diapers she's wearing?  I don't know what you're using, but Pampers DryMax was irritating Sam when she was younger.  We had the best luck with Pampers Swaddlers Sensitive.

    Good luck!

  • We had pretty good results with the original A & D ointment when he was a newborn. Lately, the Aveeno diaper rash cream works wonders when he gets it.

Pampers with DryMax were also an issue for us. He was fine in the old pampers without drymax, target brand diapers and huggies.

  • Triple paste works great for us. Nate suddenly had a really bad rash so I tried everything. Literally I own Burt's bees, California baby, both desitins, triple paste, butt paste and all kinds of powder. I even tried just aquapor. I found the culprit was pampers sensitive wipes. Idk why suddenly they bothered him but when we started solids, he got rashy. We switched to the Target brand sensitive bc they don't have alcohol in them like the other brands do. Ever since the switch, clear as day. I also would use the California Baby diaper spray and Kleenex hand towels until the rash was gone.
Baby, you've got the sort of eyes that tell me tales...

  • We use Boudreaux's butt paste. We dont deal with diaper rash a lot, but if I see any sign I have been using this which was given to me as a gift and I love it. Its a little pricy but worth it. I also use the unscented sensitive wipes most of the time anyway.

  • Triple paste works really well.  It is more expensive, but that is what his doctor recommended when he got terrible diaper rash when he had a really bad stomach bug. My doctor also had us put on a mix of Mylanta and Aquafor to help heal it since it got so raw from wiping it so much.

  • We got a prescription strength cream from our doctor after El got a bad rash from a reaction to an antibiotic. He gave us enough of it to last a while. Might be worth asking your pedi about!
  • There's also oatmeal baths. Aveeno makes a baby version (I don't really know what makes its different than the adult version, but it says baby on it). Phoenix actually has a really bad rash right now and I gave her one of the oatmeal baths last night, and I really think it helped, at least with the irritation and pain.
  • Nothing more to add except that when Evie starts to get a rash, I work my way up with the creams... Starting with the least medicated to the most medicated.  I found that "overpowering" it with the strongest cream would sometimes make it worse.  I usually start with A+D or Eucerin or even Lanolin (whatever I have on hand when I first notice), then Palmer's Butt Butter, then the Butt Paste, then the extra strength Desitin.  Most of the time, I don't have to go further than the Eucerin.  Just change her diaper frequently and make sure she is completely dry before putting anything on it.

I also don't like the Pampers dry max diapers, Pampers Baby dry diapers seem to better.  Also, Evie would break out almost immediately in Luvs.  Her bottom really hates them.  Target brand diapers seem to also agree with her as well. Good Luck!

  • Thanks !

We had run out of her Huggies so we were using the extra Pampers that the hospital gave us. I honestly think that or the milk allergy was the culprit. We have since put her back in the Huggies but the rash is still there.

I think I will try the A&D and then Triple Paste before calling the doc for an Rx.

  • Breast milk. Seriously. Also Olive had a tiny infaction on her baby toe two weeks ago (i nicked her with the nail clippers) and I put a little dab of breastmilk on it. Cleared it right up.

Since I can't bf due to the meds I'm on (thyoid & bp meds), I've dried up. Sad Had she had this rash 1.5 weeks ago, I could have used some (I was leaking for awhile).

I ended up calling the doc today b/c she is now in pain anytime she goes #2. Sad They called in a Rx for Nystatin, so hopefully that will help heal her little bum-bum.
