Come In Photography Enthusiasts!
I need advice. We're going to Egypt next month and DH gave me his blessing to buy a new lens for my camera. Ultimately, I eventually want to replace my 18-105mm zoom with an 18-200mm, but I also really want a wide angle lens. Since I already have a decent zoom, if you had the choice, would you go for the wide angle (it's 10-20mm) now or go ahead and get the zoom?
I sometimes wish I had more zoom, but then I keep thinking about all of the cool wide angle shots I could get in Egypt.
Re: Come In Photography Enthusiasts!
I have the 18-200 mm lens and I love it! Actually, it's my dad's, he let me "borrow" it. But the lens I love, like LOVE, LOVE, even more than the 18-200mm is my f1.4 50mm. Do you have a prime lens? I would rec that over any other lens, hands down.
But I have never tried out a wide angle lens so take whatever I say with a grain of salt :P
Let us know what you choose and what you think about the lens. I can never read enough reviews

I bought the f1.4 50mm back in May ;-)
I just keep coming back to the thought of 'Who wants to zoom in on the pyramids? You zoom out to capture the whole phenomenal view!'
This is true
But if it were me, I would buy a lens that you think would be the best purchase over time. What types of pics do you typically take?
I mostly do portraits so the zoom lens would be best for me. But if you travel a lot the wide angle lens might suite you better.
Excuse me if this is a dumb question, is there a big difference between 10 mm and 18 mm? Like I said, I have never tired out a wide angle lens. But now I am curious.......
Oh and have fun on your trip! I am totally jealous

To give you an idea of the difference between 10mm and 18mm (and 200mm for that matter) this is kind of a cool visual:

I would definitely go for the wide angle. Especially for travel like what you're talking about. With enough time to practice with it first because I think it might be tricky. I have zero wide angle experience, but I'm trying to get one for work so I've been looking at them, and I think it'd be really fun to play with distortion and perspective with an ultra wide angle.
Personally, I don't really like the 18-200, though I don't have very much experience with and I expect I could change my mind easily. I just thought it was really heavy and clunky, and it doesn't do anything all that special. I suppose it's nice to have that much range, but I guess it wasn't enough for me. You already have the f/1.4 50, which I just got, and I flove this lens so much I don't see myself using anything else.
Cannot wait to see your pictures!
