Washing Dry Clean Only silk stuff - what happens?

I have washed dry clean suits on a gentle cycle and hung them to dry and not had a problem, but I just a bedding set that says 100% silk and DRY CLEAN ONLY!  I already took it out of the package and put it on the bed. My skin is really sensitive and I usually have to wash everything I wear with dye and fragrance free soap prior to use. I'm having a reaction to the bed set, but I was thinking that if I could wash it, it might be ok. Soooo what would happen if I washed it? Would it fall apart? Dye come out? Get splotchy?  I also have the option of returning it, since I got it at BBB just 3 days ago, but I really like the way it looks.

  • Is it just sheets? or a comforter too?

If it was just sheets, nothing w/ stuffing, I'd probably just wash it on cool/gentle and then dry it on fluff or line dry it.

  • First of all...who makes dry clean only sheets?  I've never heard of that!

If it were up to me, personally, I'd return them.  I'm not about the maintenance of DCO items, especially sheets.

But if you really like them, I'd wash them on gentle  on cold and air dry them.

  • I would probably only use it for decorative purposes and if I was going to lay under it, I would put an extra top sheet over and around it (think about how at nice hotels they have the comforters basically wrapped in giant sheets and then just have a coverlet @ the bottom of the bed.

I have never had an issue hand-washing silk knit cardigans and cashmere- and I know my mom has probably used the delicate cycle and/or hand-washed silk blouses, but there are definitely some silks that will become discolored and or shrink or have the texture or finish be altered if they are washed w/ water.

If you do chance it I would use Woolite vs. regular free & clear detergent (which can still contain enzymes and optical brighteners, which can affect the fabric.)

  • I have a comforter that is dry clean only and I use the Dryel sheets that go in the dryer to clean it.  No way am I going to pay to have a comforter dry cleaned! Stick out tongue
