Take a 2 year old to Colorado?

DH is going to be in Denver in early December on business and DD and I were thinking of going with him.  We'd spend a night in Denver and then head to Vail.  I have never been before but DH goes every year.  I am really not into skiing but thought it may be a fun family trip and that there would be other activities we could do.  After doing some more research, I am thinking maybe DD is too young?  I am also nervous about altitude sickness.  Any advice from any of you who have traveled to the area with kids?  Thanks!

Re: Take a 2 year old to Colorado?

  • We went to Denver/Boulder when Tru was almost 3 and Mathis was 5 mos old. It was awesome. I don't know about Vail and we went in the early fall rather than winter, but Boulder is beautiful and super family friendly. We even went to a brewery to meet friends and no one batted an eye lash at the kids! Kids were everywhere. I don't know that you want to adjust your trip for this reason, but if you were considering Boulder at all, I give it an A+. Ray went to Denver for work, as well, and we were there for 2 days. I found it just so-so.

In any case, I don't see why A would be too small? She will have a blast just sitting on a snow pile! Don't forget that just because we think it's boring doesn't mean the kids will! We've taken our kids to the foot of a ski resort before the snow even fell and they had these sad little piles of man made snow. The kids thought it was the best thing ever. Just to see the mountains and experience a different climate would be great for her at this age.

As far as altitude sickness, I'd ask your doctor.

  • We went to Gunnison in May with a 6 1/2 year old and a 7 month old.  A had a blast playing in the snow and seeing all of the sights.  We didn't do much but sit and enjoy the weather.

C was fine, I'd recommend getting a humidifier for your DD's room when you go since the air is so dry there (at least it was where we were).  We were at 9,000 ft. and none of us got altitude sickness.

I think it would be a blast!

  • We went last year when L was 2. He has a blast just playing in the snow. We also rented a sled and went down some hills.

Staying hydrated is the biggest thing with altitude sickness. None of us got sick at all.

  • We've taken DS every year since he was born (sometimes twice in a year.)  First time he he was 3 months old.
  • We go to Colorado at least once a year E was just three months old our first trip. I do not get altitude sickness at all. Although I'm a native Coloradoan.

If you stay in Denver there is a ton to do. Children's museum, aquarium. 16th street mall. December can be cold but it can also be nice weather. You just have to check the forecast and layer.

As far as Vail I'm mot much for skiing but like V said Boulder is close and has some awesome things to do as well. Pearl street is beautiful!  I think all and all Colorado is very family friendly.

The only thing I notice about altitude difference is when you drink, it doesn't take much to make you tipsy!

  • Thanks so much everyone!!  After checking out the hotels, etc, it looks like there are lots for families to do.  For this trip though, my DH is going to be doing some client dinners and  there is going to be some time allotted to his work, etc so we decided tonight that it is probably not the right trip to bring Allie on.  We are thinking about just doing a couples trip and I look forward to checking out the sights to take Allie later in the winter or next year, if I have a good time :) I am a total beach vacationer so going to the cold snow country is totally out of my element!!
