I ran the half in just under 1:58 and while I'm happy with that time I'm not happy with the rest of my run after the half. The plan was to pick up my checked bag, which was my Camel Bak, and then run another 3-6 miles. Well after having to stand around and fight through the finish festival my legs had cramped up and I could barely run an incredibly slow 2 more miles.
The weather was gorgeous on Saturday morning! I was worried that it was going to be too warm to wear capris, but thankfully the wind picked up the second part of the race and that kept things cooler
How did everyone do? Anyone else sick like me and thought the hills weren't as bad as what everyone says?
Re: BRF: How'd everyone do?
Not happy with my 5K time. Too many people didn't line up for the race according to the mile pace times. I spent the first mile + weaving in and out of walkers and my split for the first mile ended up being 10:30. Not good when you're trying to go 9:00 flat. So I spent the next 2 miles trying to play catch up. I ended up finishing 29:12. Not where I wanted to be at all! Oh well- next year I know if I do the 5K again to just line up closer to the front.
My 2 co-workers who ran their first halfs Saturday did awesome and have inspired me to train to do it with them next year.
I ran the half in 2:05, which is a PR so I was super happy. The gorgeous weather and smiling faces of the people of Baltimore were definitely a contributing factor. My stomach revolted on me about 2 hours after the race, but by today I feel totally fine. I am inspired to finally go for a full next year- hopefully in Chicago!
Great job everyone!
I didn't run...but all of these times are better then my friends so GO girls!!!
That was SO annoying. I couldn't believe how hard it was to get around the walkers. People grossly underestimated how long it was going to take them!
I was in the opposite boat. I initially had signed up to run the marathon and dropped down the the half. Well my time was never adjusted so I was in the fifth wave of the half. Needless to say, I ignored my wave assignment and joined my friend up in the second wave. She was seeded in the first wave, but we could see that a ton of people joined that wave and we'd get bogged down in traffic. Sometimes a bit of congestion is good because it helps keeping me from starting out too fast!
I don't know if it was under estimating or inexperience. They never made an announcement (that I heard) about lining up by pace and the handbook just said to let faster runners line up in the front. I feel like a lot of people in the 5K were first time runners or just someone who wanted to participate in the festival. They (newbies) didn't understand that the signs on the sidewalk with 9:00 pace, etc were for the 5K to help separate out the runners so they didn't know any better but it was frustrating.
I literally stiffed armed a girl around mile 2 because she just plan stopped right in front of me. Didn't move to the side, just stopped. She didn't look happy about me pushing her, but it was either that or running over her. I love that there were so many people that wanted to run and participate, I just wish those slower weren't in my way (not saying I'm fast because I'm not). It was just very frustrating and made me not want to run big races anymore.
Actually, come to think of it I'm not sure if there were official waves for the 5k. I know exactly what you mean though, I get irked when I get into a run and there's someone in front of me who is walking. I always think, "why do you start at the front if you're going to walk?" It especially bugs me on smaller races that don't have chip timing because then I can't start late and instead have to fight through the crowds.
No- there were no official waves for the 5K but they did have mile paces marked on the side of the road to help lining up. They did this at the Arlington 9-11 5K and it worked really well even though everyone started on the same gun. At Arlington though they came over the speakers and explained how it worked to everyone and people seemed to follow it well. I did hear that even with the corrals for the half marathon there was the same problem though.
