Good travel lens for a Canon DSLR?

Anyone have a "travel" lens for their DSLR? I'm considering a Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Autofocus lens for travel. We have a trip to The Netherlands and Germany coming up in November and are debating between Kauai/The Big Island and the UK for June. I'm tired of needing to switch out lenses for just general picture taking when traveling but love the much nicer photographs from my camera vs. the little P&S.

Thoughts or other recs?

  • do you have a 50mm/1.8?

Yes, and it's a great daily lens at home, but it really isn't a great travel lens, IME. At home, I can move around to be able to adjust framing but that really isn't always possible when I'm out and about traveling. I really need something that I can adjust for typical traveling shots (scenery, people, building, etc). I know that something like the 18-200 isn't going to be awesome at 18 or 200 but I'm guessing it should be good enough for typical travel photos and give me some flexibility without switching lenses out and having to carry a bunch of gear.

  • I have an 18-200 for my nikon and i really like it... except its definitely heavier and the length can cause problems if you are trying to use the pop up flash.  I get little black shadows on the bottom of photos if I need a flash.

  • I have a hard time suggesting a lens with a variable aperture but if you are needing one with THAT big of a range, the 18-200 would fit the bill.  Have you considered a Tamron 28-75 2.8?  It is a GREAT lower cost lens with a fixed aperture?

I haven't but I've been thinking about other options since I posted this. I really don't ever zoom in that far (not really into macro) so I might look for something that is better in the lower range and doesn't go up so high. Thanks for the advice! I will look at the tamrons.

ETA: If I was too use the upper range, I'd need to use a tripod or some sort of support anyway, so I may as well just switch out lenses at that point.
