More feeding/food questions for baby....

Ok, so P is about 8-1/2 months old now and we've been doing pureed baby foods for a while, no problem.  When can I start giving him more "solid" type foods, say small pieces of what we're eating?  And can you recommend what would be best for him? What meals did/do you serve your little ones?

I tried small pieces of macaroni (plain) and little pieces of green beans the other night and he played with them more than anything.  Also, he was holding the green beans in his cheek instead of swallowing them, so I made my H dig them out for fear of him choking on them if he tried to swallow them all at once.  He eats up the Gerber puffs that melt in his mouth, but obviously those don't cause me any concern since they liquify so fast.

Re: More feeding/food questions for baby....

  • We started chunks of food when she mastered the pincher grasp.  We started with really soft chunks of veggies and fruit.  If she had a hard time grabbing them because they were slimy, i would crush up puffs and roll the food in them.

Once she stopped gagging on that (which there will probably be lots of, but don't worry.  Gagging means they aren't choking!), we added foods that were a little more firm, like pinto beans, pancakes, etc.  She was off of purees by 10 or 11 months.

I was always fearful of solid foods because she had no teeth.  At her first bday, she only had her 2 bottom teeth!  But the girl could gum food with the best of  them and did just fine! lol! (its baby #2 that I'm having issues with.  She has no interest in eating!!)

  • I think we started solids a little late in the game b/c I was so terrified of choking.  Bananas worked well for us in small chunks.  And then shredded apple.  We tried steamed carrots cut up in tiny pieces, but he didn't like those either.  Surprisingly, pickle spears were a huge success.

  • Avocado was one of Z's first "real" foods -- and remains one of her favorites today.  Like PP, I also recommend bananas & steamed carrots -- other popular staples at our house.  Other fruits like pears & peaches might also be good.  It's odd, but it's almost difficult for me to remember those early days... Where has the time gone?

    Good luck!
