I'm afraid to breathe in my house now

DH went up into the attic to put up some fiberglass insulation, having no idea what he was doing. We knew there was a "gravel looking" substance up there, but we didn't know what it was. DH called his uncle who is a gen contractor to ask a question about something and apparently that "gravel" is vermiculite. Which means there's probably asbestos up there. Everything would be ok, except that DH was pushing it around (I have no idea why) and stirred some of it up. And now I think I'm going to die of lung cancer.

  • Eeek... That's not good!  Is it nice enough out that you can open up the windows to air the house out?  I would get a for sure answer about whether or not there is asbestos before he goes up there again.  Good luck!!!  Keep us updated!!

  • Oh the joys of an older house.  I am surprised that wasn't disclosed when you bought it.  Or are you the one who bought it from a relative?  Did you get it inspected?  I would have thought it would of shown up there too.

  • Yes I was the one that got the house from a realitive. We didn't get a home inspection because FIL insisted we didn't need one because we knew most of the history of the house. And because we didn't know anything we we went with what he said. It's like 50 degrees outside so we can't really air out the house, and I don't think that would help much anyways :-/ As far as I know there's no way to confirm that there is asbestos present except to send a sample off to a lab. DH is going to rent a respirator and go up there in some kind of haz-mat suit to put of the insulation on Saturday. Hopefully we can just do that and leave it alone. Unfortunately that also means that we probably will never be able to resell this house

  • You should have no problem reselling... almost every house built before 1968 has asbestos in it.  The key is to not disturb it and if you have to you should wear appropriate safety clothing and masks.

  • I agree with PP, most older houses have some form of asbestos in them, and everything will be fine if you leave it alone.

However, perhaps you could get it tested?   And if it is asbestos, then start saving to get it removed.  It may be expensive, but will be worth it in the long run for both your peace of mind and resale value.
