S08 Race?

On the email chain this morning, Emily mentioned the idea of doing a GTG for a race. I think it's a great idea and could be a ton of fun. Would anybody else be interested? I'm just testing the waters right now, but I'm pretty sure I could get DH to make a long weekend out of something like this.

Emily found this one in Cincinnati called the Flying Pig. There is a marathon, half, 4 person relay,10k, and 5k. It's on May 6, 2012. I'm sure there are other options, so bring them on, too.

Re: S08 Race?

  • I'm definitely interested, however I wouldn't be able to make a May race due to SIL's wedding that we'll be going back to KS for 5 days for in May.

I don't have any suggestions right now though!

  • The Detroit races (in October) are fun. There's a 5k, half and full marathons. The half and full cross the bridge into Canada and back. I walked the half a few years ago (so much fun!), and would be willing to walk it again. (I am not a runner, but enjoy walking!)

This sounds like a stupid question, but would you need a passport for that?

I think so. I can't remember how it worked since it's been 6 years since I walked it.

  • Cinci is about a 5 hour drive for me, so it might be doable.

You know I'd do the Detroit ones!

  • As long as I have enough notice to save travel money I'm in! This sounds so fun!

  • If its within driving distance I may be able to walk one. I am not a runner so if worse came to worse I can come be a sideline cheerleader and maybe babysitter..lol

  • I'm in, and would be willing to be a leg on a relay.  However, the Flying Pig is smack in the middle of finals for me so I doubt that timing would work (I don't even know what classes I'm teaching yet let alone when my final(s) will be).

  • Oh, I just realized that the Broad Street run in Philly is also that day, so I'm definitely out for that weekend.  There were two races on my "bucket list"; the half I just did and Broad Street (10 mi), and I'm finally going to do that with my friends from my running group this coming year.

  • I'd love to do a walking one! The Detroit one sounds cool (plus I know DH would be pshyched to go to Detroit!)

I'm thinking about doing this again. I've done it twice, once on 3 hrs sleep (which I was much fitter) and this spring when i was not in good enough shape to be happy with it. Its a cool race. i'd like to run it "for real" someday.

Flying Pig is on my bucket list of "someday" (below Disney), but this Detroit race looks really cool. I mean crossing the border midrace??

There are other Flying Pigs. I think the Detroit one sounds cool, too. I'll do some research. We'll find something! Finals/graduation time probably isn't great for me, either. I won't HAVE to go to graduation, but I think I would like to help.

Come to Cincy!! I'm tossing around the idea of running this half anyway (its also my 26th birthday). If you guys pick this race I promise to tell you about all the fun things to do in Cincy ;) Maybe Ana can come down too-she's only about 1.5 hours away.

  • I know I haven't been around much...but just wanted to butt in since I work for a race timing company.  You guys should come here and run one of our timed/produced events! Only one that comes to mind right now is Flower City in the Spring... :)
  • This is too funny - I just ran the Detroit Marathon and you do get to cross into Canada as part of the race.  We did need our passport for the full and the half but only the legs that are in Canada for the relay need passports.  It's an awesome race though and I really loved it.  I would love to do the relay as it seems really well organized.

For my next marathon I've already registered for the Flying Pig - I'll be running the full but would love to run with some of the group for parts of the race.  I warn you, I'm slow though!  Smile
