house plants

we noticed with the baby in our room that there is alot of dust/pet allergies. AJ becomes very congested when he is the room. the dog's bed is also on the other side of the room... we decided to put a house plant in the corner of our room to clean the air a little...

anybody have any house plants that they use to clean indoor allergies? which ones do you use? where did you purchase them?

Re: house plants

  • I recommend (not a plant) a cool mist humidifier.

It really helps with the congestion - esp as this time of year approaches.

  • we use a cool mist humidifer.. we are also using saline drops and the aspirator. pedi said its totally normal with babies this young. i was thinking the that plant in the corner of the room would help clean any pet allergies or or dust allergies that are in the air!

Hello. I've waited here for you. Everlong<3
• I have read that for every indoor plant you have it will clean 10 feet of living space. We got a low maintenance plant at home depot- they have a whole bunch of indoor plants that are fairly inexpensive.

  • Move the pet out of the room to start if there are pet allergies.

I don't honestly believe a plant will cure dust/pet allergies.

  • we moved his crate into the living room and kept his bed in the bedroom. he sleeps in the crate but will lay on the bed if we are lounging. the baby is fine when we're on the couch or the dog is laying next to him.

  • i think peace lily/spathyphyllum, snake/mother in laws toungue, english ivy, dracena and pothos are all good low light easy plants.

however, check to see that it isn't poisonous for your dog...and know that houseplants need to be dusted often too- not sure of you want more work! what about the air purifiers that plug in and require as much work as changing filters?

Hello. I've waited here for you. Everlong<3
• a ficus requires a lot of sun - full sun - or it will shed. they're very messy - you'll always be picking up leaves!

if you want tall, look for a dracena - a/k/a corn plant

ETA: i grew up in a family business around plants. this convo brings back retail memories - lol

  • I have a vicks air purifier in Mj's room. Not sure about plants but I need to ask my mom but you should have a specific number of plants per specific square footage. or something like that.

  • I've read articles that say children raise with dogs in the home and less likely to have allergies. It may be the change in the weather. Try a humidifier first

  • Most newborns have congestion issues, especially c-section babies. It will clear up on it's own in a few weeks. It doesn't have anything to do with allergies so I doubt a plant will help. A humidifier will help him feel more comfortable at least until it clears up but that's probably all you can do.
