So I was thinking of doing lessons for Lyra this winter with Barb, she will be one in January. Obviously not to swim but more for something to get us out of the house. Is that to soon? Should I wait. She loved floating around the pool over the summer.

We started Mommy and me classes at Nathan Hale when E was 1 year old and will start Ian when he turns 6m.
E told me at lunch that she would go to swimming if the floor was higher. I think she might be scared because she can't touch the bottom of the pool in the shallow part like she can at our neighborhood pool. Hmmmm.
Just as an FYI, we had a very bad experience with the downtown Y swim lessons. Teacher (I would guess about 15 or so, as they all are) took 6 children under 2 all the way down the length of the pool. Obviously none of these kids could swim even remotely or support themselves in any way. I was literally running down the stairs from the viewing deck b/c I was afraid a kid would have to be pulled out. She wasn't even watching all of them (it would have been impossible). It was ridiculous & we didn't go back.
Not too long thereafter, a 5 yr old was found on the bottom of the pool (his Mom saw him) DURING swimming lessons. He was pulled from the pool unconscious & the squad was called. He was resuscitated & did live.
Obviously not all Y's are the same, I just wanted to let you know about this experience. I am by no means a nervous nelly parent but seeing that kid drag all those babies, trying to swim herself & drag all of them through the deep end, was so scary. She obviously didn't have good training & had no idea how dangerous that was (though frankly if she had been an adult I think even a non-lifeguard or non-swimmer would have had the common sense not to do that).
Positive: Swim lessons at Brownell Talbot = awesome. Older DS has been going for a year, baby dude (2 in Dec) starts in December.
Holy crap.
Holy Crap!!!
But, we'd be using the CB Y - I've been in water classes when they are doing lessons and they are really good. Parents stay in the class for infants/toddlers anyways (until 3 I think).
I wish we had more places in CB for swimming lessons.

Agreed, holy crap is right. At that Y, parents only went in for the infant class (I want to say 12 mo & under). Even very little toddlers went in by themselves; they have a "deck" that goes under water so they can stand up. When they're really little, they sit them on the side.
I don't know, I was just REALLY unimpressed with them. They are clearly all highschool kids who don't have any idea what they are doing. I am 10000000x happier at Brownell. Good luck, I think making sure your kids know how to swim is super important too.
