S/O Tea

Ok, so I've now seen this term twice today.  What's the difference between sweet tea and "southern" sweet tea?

  • Sweet tea has some sugar in it. Southern sweet tea has enough sugar to turn a person into a diabetic with one sip. We're talking, run out of syrup, you can pour this on your pancakes and still be good to go.

lol. It's true, but oh man do I love southern sweet tea when I can get my hands on it. Which isn't very often up here. I did discover Longhorns sells it, and it's bangin.

  • So I'm guessing that our regular sweet tea is what people on the east coast would call "southern" sweet tea then.  lol

  • If I was ordering in a restaurant here, I would just order sweet tea, but when talking to people from other areas I tend to ask if it is sweet tea or southern sweet tea. My BFF's mom is from Arizona and her tea tends to be made with simple syrup instead of brewed tea with sugar...

  • Put it this way, for a gallon of tea. When my mom makes tea (born and raised in Laf., IN) she puts in 1/4-1/2 cup of sugar. This makes sweet tea.

My grandma (God rest her, also born and raised in Laf., IN) and my MIL (Southern MO/IL) put 1 cup to 1 1/2 cup sugar in theirs. This makes southern sweet tea. I just put it in til it tastes good. lol

Dyork - doesn't BK or McDon's do Southern Sweet Tea up there? If not, this is severely sad, and I'll figure out a way to ship you a few gallons.

Oh that's right! McDonalds does! I just never go there. But DH's Aunt (who's from GA) makes amazing sweet tea. I'd drink that stuff all day if I could.

  • I can't even fathom how you could even taste 1/4 cup of sugar in a gallon of tea!  OMG!  lol

If I am making sweet tea with actual sugar, I use at least 1 cup.

Eek, I'd die lol.  I tend to like things bitter though, so 1/4 cup of sugar sounds just right for a gallon of tea for me.

  • Sounds like my cousin. I offer her tea when she comes over, and she always says "is it sweet? Like grandma sweet?" Hells yeah! She usually sticks with water.
