Anyone else starting to plan for the holidays?

I don't have kids, so other than setting out a pumpkin or two and getting candy for trick-or-treaters, Halloween is a non-event for me.

HOWEVER ... I am PSYCHED for my first Thanksgiving and Christmas as a married lady! I'm hosting my first Thanksgiving for my inlaws and then hosting a cocktail party two weeks later in our new home.

I'm so excited and want to do everything right so I'm already starting to plan! Anyone else as crazy as me?

Re: Anyone else starting to plan for the holidays?

  • DD was still too young last yr but I'm excited to see her excitement and take everything in.

Also, i've already started some small shopping for Christmas.

  • I actually started Christmas shopping the other day so I guess you could say I'm starting to plan.  I picked up something for 3 out of the 5 nieces/nephews so far that will be paired with other things down the road.

As far as hosting/parties go, DH and I never partake.  We just don't have the room at our place for a sit-down event.  We have however started to talk about what we're bringing to Thanksgiving this year.  My brother and SIL always host and everyone brings food.  This year we're doing apps...last year it was dessert.

  • We're going away w/ DH family for Thanksgiving so if by "plan" you mean "dread" than, yes, I'm starting to plan for that holiday.

For Christmas, I'm not exactly sure what we are doing this year - we'll probably host it at our house this year for our parents.  There isn't too much to plan though.  We'll decorate the weekend after Thanksgiving/first week of December, then we'll DD's birthday party and then Christmas 2 weeks later.  DD and I will bake cookies for Santa on Christmas Eve and we'll make brunch the next day.

I did start my Christmas list today though, b/c I really would like to be done w/ my shopping by Thanksgiving.  I'm going to start ordering stuff now.

  • I've booked our flights to OH for Thanksgiving and I'm pushing DH to give me the ok to book the flights for Christmas. That's pretty much as far as I've gotten. We probably aren't going to buy DD many gifts this year for Christmas as she isn't going to realize whats going on and she'll be plenty spoiled by her grandparents.

Best idea ever! That is how we were last yr.  We bought one *token* gift that we plan to make a tradition. She was just too young to understand AND she was plenty spoiled by the grandies.

  • I have started to thinking about what I want for Christmas and I have started shopping for my family too. When I see things that need fixing or replacement I add them to the list.

As for Thanksgiving/Christmas dinner, I haven't really thought about it to much. I'm probably going to let my Aunt host this year for Christmas. I'm really excited about the holidays this year. DD is at a great age to understand things.

We also have our front porch decorated for Halloween and every time DD gets home from daycare she loves pointing out all the pumpkins. I really need to get started on her Halloween costume.

  • I've been working on more Christmas shopping/figuring out what gifts are left to buy (we buy throughout the year as we find things for people).  We don't host TG, so the extent of "planning" for that will be whatever dishes I need to make to contribute to TG dinner.  As for Christmas, we're planning our schedules for that, b/c w/ Christmas being on a Sunday, it's going to be a busy weekend for DH (2 services on Christmas Eve and then regular Sunday services the next day).  We usually travel to Pittsburgh during the week between Christmas and New Year's, but we've been mulling that over already b/c I'll be 35 weeks pg.  Just lots of little details that we're trying to nail down before things get too hectic w/ the holiday season.

At this point, between it being DH's first year at this church (and needing to figure out just how they like to do Christmas services) and the fact of being quite pg w/ a toddler, I don't think we'll bother hosting anything at our house... but if we do anything, it would likely just be a small gathering of friends for a cocktail party sometime before Christmas.

  • I've started thinking about the holidays if that counts! I got DS a Halloween costume (that I still need to pick up at the post office). And I've nagged my parents to figure out what we're doing for Thanksgiving so we can plan accordingly. It looks like ILs will be coming to my parents' house for Thanksgiving so that makes it easy on us.

No Christmas plans yet. We are also not planning to go crazy with gifts for DS. I want to get him a stocking and a couple things though. I'm sure grandparents will get him lots of stuff!

  • We already have our plans for what we are doing on Thanksgiving.  I would like to start Christmas shopping next month, just to get it done and not have to worry about taking DS into crazy ville when December hits.

  • We really don't do too much for halloween.... we'll def buy some candy for the kids, if DH gets home in time (I'll be on the road).  Thanksgiving will be at my parents and inlaws.  I'll just need to figure out what I'm making for each.  Christmas shopping started a couple of weeks ago.  I would like to be done by Thanksgiving but we'll see.  I'll host Christmas eve for my family this year since I really don't want to drive down to my parents 2 days in a row.  My inlaws will have dinner on Christmas day.

  • I'm really looking forward to Christmas this year especially because we should be settled in our new house and ready for hosting company.
  • I'm working on Halloween stuff now - got DD's costume and our pumpkins, and we're planning a little family night in the weekend of Halloween to make cupcakes, watch Halloween movies, do some Halloween crafts, etc. DD's school does Trunk-or-Treating where all the parents back their cars up to the sidewalk, pop the trunks, decorate inside the trunk and hand out candy. They have activities going on in the building and it's just an extended Halloween party for the school kids. And of course regular trick-or-treating. I just wish I could figure out if that's going to be on actual Halloween or the Saturday before.

I have no idea what we'll do for Thanksgiving or Christmas, but my best guess is that my Mom will host one or both. I wish our house was big enough to host, but I just can't fit a sit down dinner for 13-15 people here.

Oh, wait, I did start preparing for Christmas! I took DD to the toy section at Target and took notes on the things that caught her eye. I'm going to start picking up stuff here and there and hopefully be done well before Christmas. She's the only one we're buying for this year.

  • I just put up our Halloween decorations a few minutes ago. I have My daughter's costume, but I need to come up with something for my husband and myself. If I leave him to his own devices it might be bad. He is pushing to be Dorothy to match her lion. I think it is a bit too over the top.

I bought our plane tickets for Thanksgiving in May. My daughter's second birthday is the Sunday before, so she needed a plane ticket too. I was proud of myself for remembering to look into it so early, and I got a great deal.

We are driving to West Virginia for Christmas. When we are there we have to split our time between both sides of my husband's family.  I have not started shopping yet, but I have ideas.

I would like to spend one holiday at home.

  • All of our plans are basically made.

DD has 2 costumes, thanks to my mom who bought her a Tinkerbell costume because it was on sale, in addition to her Izzy costume from Jake & the Neverland pirates show. We don't really decorate for Halloween as we don't get any trick-or-treaters. We are going to a pumpkin patch w/ DDs class on Thursday and if I can get away w/ just those 2 small pumpkins I will be thrilled- we do have some mums that are blooming if that makes me seem less Halloween grinch-like.

We are going to Duck NC for Thanksgiving w/ both sets of grandparents.

We are going away w/ the ILs for 4-5 days like 3 days after Christmas, so that will be our Christmas time with them. We will probably do Christmas eve @ my parents' and host Christmas dinner for my parents and maybe some friends as well.

I ordered monogrammed towels for the ILs for their gift when NM was having a good sale on their really nice towels. Of course MIL e-mailed me the other day saying she wanted 6 bowls to replaces ones she broke- unless I can find them for $5 a piece @ Tuesday morning she is going to have to be happy w/ just the towels.

  • This should come as no surprise to some of the older regulars but yes, I am preparing! I bought 1/4 of my gifts, have my remaining gift list almost done, planned traveling for Thanksgiving and Christmas, have decorations bought or brought down from the attic, and now I countdown until Christmas music!

Ok, everyone roll eyes now :)

  • Well, we have started planning Thanksgiving, to see who is coming and what they are bringing.

We've planned to go to our parents for xmas. I'm can't wait to see DD open presents, but I am a little concerned because she likes to eat paper.

  • I am also super excited... I love the holidays :) We normally host Thanksgiving at our house but this year we're going up to my brother and SIL's house in NH. Christmas is usually spread out over a few days as we celebrate with different parts of the family around MD. I'm super proud of myself for getting started on christmas/hannukah gifts :)

  • We are ready for Halloween.  Aiden is counting down the days till trick or treating.  He's going to be Spiderman, and Claire is going to be a cupcake.  We are trunk or treating this weekend, so I know he's going to be super excited!

Thanksgiving plans are up in the air.  My ILs invited themselves down for the weekend after, and I just don't have the energy to cook two Thanksgivings any more.

I am already getting excited for Christmas.  Aiden is too!  He's at such a fun age, and I just can't wait!  I am about 75% done my shopping, too!  We are having our ILs come the weekend before Christmas, so that's been motivation to get stuff done early.
