Cross your fingers for the Basque Country & Spain
Here's hoping
the conference in San Sebastian convinces "that band of violent Basque separatists" to lay down arms. The only thing is my FIL's group of friends will shrink by at least a half now that the politicians in the group will be able to leave the house without bodyguards!
Re: Cross your fingers for the Basque Country & Spain
I did for the last two years as DH is Basque. I now live 30 minutes away.
The Basque Country (Euskal Herria) truly is the most beautiful place (although I may be biased since I'm from there).
(I know I'm totally going to be flamed for this, and probably shouldn't say anything... but so few people know about the history of the region)
I'm from the French side though and that part has always been peaceful, so I can't really say for sure about the people's views from the Spanish Basque regarding ETA's activities. The Basque Country existed long before Spain and France, and all they really want is to be allowed to self govern. It is true that they had a violent period, but for decades now they try to only do infrastructural damage (always informing the authorities beforehand as to not have any human casualties)... I don't support their tactics in any way, but can understand a people's desire to fight for their homeland. Imagine if someone came to your home and said that from now on you are part of Mexico or Canada...
I'm not saying that I don't want them to reach a peaceful agreement, who doesn't want peace?! I just wanted to give another point of view on the ETA issue.
When I see the Basque country referred to as "Euskal Herria" I can bet where the paragraph is going...
I'm not sure I can agree that infrastructural damage includes assassinating the local head of the high speed train project... or putting a car bomb in front of the local military school and taking the life of a young man who was standing guard at the front door. Both of which have happened within the last three years. I can most definitely understand a peaceful fight for one's homeland, but I think the "let's make things go boom" tactic expired when Patxi - er, Franco - did. Legalizing Bildu and taking the "fight" political is a step in the right direction. I hope we don't take any steps back.
Please don't take this as disrespectful in any way, and I hope you don't feel I'm flaming you. It's just the reality that we're living here.
Like I said, I don't agree with the way they are doing it. I don't think blowing things up is the way to go. It's just that a lot of time when people talk about ETA they view them more like true terrorists in its the general term (bombing schools, killing hundreds... that kind of stuff). I just wanted to give a little more background.
Thanks elenetxu for not attacking me for my earlier comment
I was really nervous posting it because I know a lot of people could misinterpret what I wrote as meaning that I agree with ETA.
