Where should we go next?

So we're just starting to talk about our next proper holiday. Will be sometime between February - April next year. We have a wedding in England in mid-April and a wedding in Portugal at the beginning of June. We are thinking 1-2 weeks for this trip.

We're on a theme of always adding a new country on our trips now. I've been to all the countries in the UK, Austria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, India, Japan and Israel. DH has been to all of those minus Estonia and Finland, plus Turkey and Malta.

Thoughts we're tossing around are Bratislava / Budapest / Vienna, something involving Russia (although the costs are seeming a bit prohibitive but maybe it's totally worth it? Or maybe it will be really, really cold at that time of year?), or a Latvia / Lithuania plan. We've also talked about an Israel / Egypt idea. What am I missing?? We're not considering S. America, Australia, or Asia as we're trying to keep the flight costs down.

Thanks!!

Re: Where should we go next?

  • I think that time of year I'd go south, not east. Russia seems like it would be FREEZING at that time of year in my mind but that could be totally off the mark.

I would say Israel/Egypt sounds like a good combo. Or any ME nation you haven't been to and are interested in visiting. I'd also maybe throw Morocco on the list.

  • Bratislava, Budapest and Vienna! Latvia and Russia would be way too cold In February.

  • I heard Libya will soon be opening up to more visitors. ;-) No, seriously, though I agree that you should head south at that time of year. I second the motion to do Morocco or Egypt/Israel/Jordan.

ooohhh... Morocco. I've had Marrakesh in the back of my mind forever. We could probably do a long weekend in Marrakesh and save some vacation time too! Another for the list...

I do agree with everyone, North//Russia will be really cold. I went to Tallinn in March with a girlfriend and it was snowing. It was really pretty though!

  • I agree with Morocco, but if you're in Vienna/Budapest/Bratislava in Jan, we might be able to meet up.
  • I've heard that Russia isn't that great from a friend who travels a lot.  She thinks it's a trip to do when you're old.  Plus, there is the whole freezing cold thing.

I'd do more than a long weekend in Morocco.  Rabat has the old casbah and Fez is pretty cool, too.  Plus Meknes could be interesting as one of the ancient capitals, and there is some music festival in a beach town, I think it's called Essaouria or something like that?  Anyway, there is definitely more to Morocco than Marrakesh; it'd be a shame to go all that way and only see one city.

  • I studied in Lithuania and was there from January through May. It was cold up through the beginning of May - like 15-20 degrees F most of the time. Such a wonderful place and I would go back in a heartbeat. We did a week in Russia too, and I absolutely loved it. Probably my favorite place ever. If you don't mind the cold, I would suggest you go there. We went over Easter, and I don't know if I have ever been so cold in my life. St. Petersburg is absolutely beautiful, and I love the underground in Moscow - stunning! We did lots of ballets and the Hermitage is great.

If you really want to go in the early spring, I would probably suggest someplace warmer for this trip. I would probably do Israel/Egypt - what about Turkey?

  • I'm not sure what your budget is, but just fyi, H and I just booked round trip tickets to Christchurch in March for $400 for the two of us on AirAsia X.  I have also recently booked a one way ticket on Air Asia X to London for $200 in December.  You could possibly fly from London to Australia or New Zealand round trip stopping only in KL for somewhere around $600 a person.

That being said, I'd totally do the Baltic trip.  Or the Israel trip (btw-there is now a direct Easy Jet flight from Geneva to Tel Aviv.  In May last year you could get round trip tickets for something like $150).  I am dying to visit both places.

  • You know I always push for the Baltic - we did Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania and it was one of the best trips i have ever done. Russia is amazing, and we honeymooned in Morocco and really enjoyed it.
