  • 1. eating too much & then napping?  does that count?!?  :)  If not, then watching the Macy's TDay Parade while cooking.

    2. Ice skating outdoors.

    3. The US Botanic Gardens Conservatory (on the mall) has a lovely holiday display.

    4. Turkey, obs.  It's really the only day/year we eat it!

    6. My family always did potato soup on xmas eve; my husband's family does a large assortment of seafood: steamed mussels, raw oysters, salmon baked in salt, etc.

  • 1.  Getting up to start cooking but you do it in your lounge clothes with the macys day parade on in the background and then football on after.

    2.  Midnight mass on Christmas Eve

    3.  my mind isn't wanting to think so the only thing I can think of is the monuments.  If you know far enough in advance try to get a tour of the Pentagon.

    4.  Always turkey, stuffing, mashed potato, veggie and wine

    5.  Fresh cranberries - not the canned stuff

    6.  Christmas Eve is always cold cut sandwiches if my parents are hosting.  For Christmas day they always make spedini's and lasagna and fresh bread for dinner (my mom's italian).

    Shopping?  Sorry but I love the sales..lol

    St. Nicks Day, Love Love Love St. Nicks Day.  We also use to do a small gag gift every weekend growing up which was fun as a kid 

    3. Anything that screams DC that we should take visitors too?

    National Tree.  Its a tradition for us to go and I love seeing all the state's trees

    4. One food you have to have for Thanksgiving?

    Mashed Potatoes :-)

    5. One food you have added to your Thanksgiving menu in the last few years?

    Cranberry Sauce one year, but this year its just DH and I so I will keep the cooking to a minimum.

    6. Any special Christmas eve menus?

    Nope, we always went to restaurants for Christmas Eve.

  • 1. Favorite Thanksgiving tradition?

    we always went to the movies that night.

    2. Favorite December tradition?

    I like driving around to find the craziest lights. Also, I like in Annapolis when they decorate the boats. 

    3. Anything that screams DC that we should take visitors too?

    Ice Skating on the Mall. The National Cathedral all decorated. Or a trip to Mount Vernon.

    4. One food you have to have for Thanksgiving?

    mashed potatoes

    DH added Paula Dean's mac and cheese recipe. I have recently added roasted fennel.

    growing up we always did Chinese food. The past few years we have made enchiladas.

  • 1. Favorite Thanksgiving tradition? Watching the Macy's parade, then the National Dog Show all while moving between the living room and the kitchen to help out.

    2. Favorite December tradition? Decorating the tree! (We always wait until at least December 1.)

    3. Anything that screams DC that we should take visitors too? Zoo Lights! DH and I went for the first time last year and really enjoyed it. It was free, but I thought I heard they're charging this year...

    4. One food you have to have for Thanksgiving? Turkey- wouldn't be Thanksgiving without it! Besides turkey, mashed potatoes.

    5. One food you have added to your Thanksgiving menu in the last few years? Our menu hasn't changed for quite a while, but my mom did add a green bean dish that she makes with tomatoes, onions, and oregano.

    6. Any special Christmas eve menus? No, but I'd love to start a tradition, like for NYE when my parents and I always had Chinese.

    2. Favorite December tradition? Wrapping presents.

    4. One food you have to have for Thanksgiving? Turkey- brined and roasted please!

    5. One food you have added to your Thanksgiving menu in the last few years? I do southern fried corn- something my grandma makes for Christmas for Thanksgiving at my house.

    6. Any special Christmas eve menus? No, we alternate families and mine is more traditional whereas his is more convenience based, so Christmas is different every year.

    4. One food you have to have for Thanksgiving?  besides turkey... stuffing!  other family members have "special requests" that I will make for them.  i put a call out 2 weeks in advance for any special requests. 

    5. One food you have added to your Thanksgiving menu in the last few years?  corn souffle.  it's like a corn pudding type thing.  my dh and bil's love it.

    6. Any special Christmas eve menus?  we don't do dinner on christmas eve.  i do like to make cinnamon rolls on christmas eve after church - let them rise overnight = yummy christmas morning treat!

    Christmas Eve is the best!  We have a big dinner with the family and usually open some presents

    last year i wanted to do the gaylord thing where it snowed inside and i think they had ice sculptures?

Any special Christmas eve menus?  If we're with my family, there is a feast of every kind of munchy food you can think of, plus crab legs (no idea why the crab legs).  DH's family does spaghetti and meatballs and it's gross (canned sauce, frozen meatballs, etc).  When we're alone we'll do crudite, and some simple apps.  Oh, and pitchers upon pitchers or mimosas.

  • our holiday traditions are few and/or quirky because my b-day is around thanksgiving, DH's family is jewish, and we (mostly) claimed thanksgiving as ours when we started dating.  1. Favorite Thanksgiving tradition? going to the movies that night. we do this on christmas too. sometimes it's a lot of my aunts, uncles, and cousins too. 2. Favorite December tradition? having some kind of holiday breakfast cocktail with DH & my grandma on christmas morning. sometimes it's mimosas, one year it was hibiscus syrup, and this year it will probably be cinnamon bitters. 3. Anything that screams DC that we should take visitors too? we really liked the zoo lights last year. we got venti hot chocolate at starbucks to stay toasty. i was totally disappointed in the white house tree though :( 4. One food you have to have for Thanksgiving? traditional: mashed potatoes, non-traditional: birthday cake 5. One food you have added to your Thanksgiving menu in the last few years? last year we did thanksgiving instead of christmas with my fam and i made pioneer woman's cornbread dressing with sausage and apples (minus the apples because DH didn't want a sweet dressing). i almost never eat stuffing/dressing but i had to try it and it was quite good. the fam loooooved it. http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/2010/10/cornbread-dressing-with-sausage-and-apples/

Any special Christmas eve menus? when it's an option, we like to have homemade pizza and watch emmett otter's jug band christmas. i'd never even heard of the movie until i met DH. he used to watch it with his mom (who converted to judaism to marry his dad) and it was the one christmas-y tradition they had.

  • 1. Favorite Thanksgiving tradition? Eating too much! Saying what we're thankful for.

    2. Favorite December tradition? Watching "It's a Wonderful Life," hanging Christmas cards in the window, wrapping presents and decorating the tree.

    3. Anything that screams DC that we should take visitors too? Uh, I don't know.

    4. One food you have to have for Thanksgiving? Besides the obvious? Pumpkin bars with cream cheese frosting.

    5. One food you have added to your Thanksgiving menu in the last few years? Corn pone and homemade cranberry sauce. And wine!

    6. Any special Christmas eve menus? When we used to do Christmas Eve with my BFF's family every year, we would always have ham and baked beans (not sure why). Now that DH and do Christmas Eve together, we generally have some crostini/snacky foods from Whole Foods and wine.

  • 1. Favorite Thanksgiving tradition?  Trivial Pursuit after dinner.  Football on the lawn.  Pancakes for breakfast. 

    2. Favorite December tradition?  I love driving around to look at the lights.  Decorating the tree and the house is a close second.

    3. Anything that screams DC that we should take visitors too?  A fun one is the waterskiing Santa on Christmas Eve.  I also love the lights in Batimore on 34th Street.   

    4. One food you have to have for Thanksgiving?  I love Cranberry Sauce. 

    5. One food you have added to your Thanksgiving menu in the last few years?  Cooks Country Sweet Potato Casserole with the brown sugar pecan streusel.  So incrediby delicious.  Makes you want to sing.

    6. Any special Christmas eve menus?  When I was little my mom and I would go to the mall for one last walk around and then out for a girls dinner while my dad and 3 brothers did boy things.  The last few years that I've been hosting we do lasagne or something similar that I can make in advance.  With the kids we usually go to the early Christmas Eve mass and and get home just at dinner time.   Christmas is the big dinner for us.

    2. Favorite December tradition? The "December 1st Box" - getting out just a few favorite decorations on December 1st. This dates back to my childhood, when my mom was a teacher and didn't have time to do all the decorating right at the beginning of Dec, so we were allowed to choose our favorite things and they were all stored in 1 box and that's what we got out on Dec. 1st.

    3. Anything that screams DC that we should take visitors too? My favorite things are the tree on the Ellipse and the Botanical Gardens. 

    4. One food you have to have for Thanksgiving? Apple pie, from the recipe my mom has used since the 70's

    5. One food you have added to your Thanksgiving menu in the last few years? cornbread dressing w/ pomegranate seeds

    6. Any special Christmas eve menus? At our house, DH and I do grilled cheese & tomato soup (I may try homemade soup this year). DH's dad & stepmom do the full-blown turkey dinner Christmas eve. No one else really has a specific tradition (I didn't grow up with one, the grilled cheese thing is a recent tradition DH and I started together - we also have that the night before Thanksgiving).

  • 1. Favorite Thanksgiving tradition?  Going to the movies after dinner.

    2. Favorite December tradition?  I love decorating our house and putting up the Christmas tree.

    3. Anything that screams DC that we should take visitors too?  The White House tree, the Capitol tree, and the houses with the crazy lights in Baltimore.

    4. One food you have to have for Thanksgiving?  Other than the obvious (turkey and stuffing), I require pumpkin pie.

  • 1. Favorite Thanksgiving tradition? I haven't done it in awhile, but helping my grandmother make her parker house rolls. And then eating as many as I possibly could.

    2. Favorite December tradition? Christmas brunch at my dad's house. Drinking mimosas and eating oysters in our pajamas while my dad makes ginormous omelets that no one can finish.

    3. Anything that screams DC that we should take visitors too? I guess the White House Christmas tree, but I think the decorations all around the Mall and in the museums are particularly nice.

    4. One food you have to have for Thanksgiving? STUFFING. Preferably my grandmother's.

    5. One food you have added to your Thanksgiving menu in the last few years? Sweet potatoes with caramelized apples.

    6. Any special Christmas eve menus? We're usually out and about with family on Christmas eve but if we were home, I'd probably do prime rib.

  • 1. Favorite Thanksgiving tradition? Pulling out all the ads from the paper and making a shopping list for Black Friday.  My aunts/uncles and parents always divided and conquered (and then would randomly run into each other in the stores).

    2. Favorite December tradition? Just one?  Hmmm...three way tie for decorating the tree, baking cookies, and wrapping presents

    3. Anything that screams DC that we should take visitors too? Definitely Pageant of Peace/Christmas trees on the Ellipse

    6. Any special Christmas eve menus? DH is Italian so we do feast of the seven fishes with his family.  My family usually does a ham with various finger foods as we had a big party and it made socializing easier!
