Mama Whine

I should preface my whine by saying that Ky really is an incredible dad to Will: he's super hands on, loves spending time with him, has no qualms about changing him, giving him baths, feeding him. etc. and will get up in the middle of the night if need be without thinking twice. He acknowledges my hard work, and wants to be a part of everything in Will's life.

That being said...

Will has recently started sleeping through the night (about 8-9 hours a night, amazing!), and I attribute this to keeping his night time routine pretty regular- a sort of modification of the 4Ss. After going over the system together and agreeing on it, he seems to be continually "modifying" the system depending on his mood. I try not to be nagging about it, but it frustrates the bejesus out of me. While Will is a really easy baby and can adapt pretty well, the bedtime routine is the one thing I like to try to keep pretty regular. I do my best not to nag him about it, but good lord- JUST EFFING DO THE SYSTEM! It works well, and we both know it!

I guess it's just one of those things that we've got to work on, but it can be very frustrating when I feel like we're getting into a groove and you're tinkering with it. It can be a bit tricky I guess with two people parenting and trying to maintain consistency. It's a good thing he's cute! Wink

Re: Mama Whine

  • Sorry you're having to be vigilant about making sure Kyle stays with the system, Mollie!  I've lost count of the number of friends who've complained about how their definition of consistency is different from their partner's, so I imagine it's a common issue among parents.  However, that doesn't make it any less frustrating!  I think I'll send Kyle some "stick with it, everyone loves a solid bedtime routine" vibes.  ;-)
  • Oh I remember this well! Our saving grace, in a weird way, was because of all Caroline's tummy problems we had o log everything. B/c of that we became regimented with eveything. So, for the most part we were on the same page. While routines are good, don't worry too much. Will will adapt better than you :) if he's an easy baby and sleeping thru at this point, it's probably more him than the routine. We were lucky with DD with that too. Just tell DH flat out how you feel and explain it to him about followIng the regime, he knows all about routines in his work life, so tell him here is one at home too :) good to hear from you!!!
  • the one thing that i didn't realize is how tricky the co-parenting/taking care of responsibilities together thing can be.  we're in a groove now, but it certainly took a while and much stress to re-adjust.

  • Thanks girls- I just needed to put on my tiara and have a little vent, I feel better now! We're pretty flexible with most things with Will, I just like to keep bedtime relatively routine, and we're getting there.

I miss you all! Things are settling down here in the South, so I hope to be around more now. I've tried to at least check in regularly and read up on everyone's happenings, it's usually my night time oasis. Smile

  • Ugh. Kyle. Just do what Mollie tells you to do! It is what is best for everyone.

Have you talked with him to tell him the importance of a set routine, no modifications even if Will adapts to it?

Why do men love to cut corners??

  • Kick him in the shins!! I'm totally kidding. It sounds like overall you guys are adjusting well - it has got to be tricky with two people trying to get into a groove that works for everyone - I hope he will start sticking with the system more consistently!

And also, holy guacamole, 8-9 hours at a stretch? Go Will!!

  • I do have to say though, while routine is great... a little "modification" will help Will in the long run as well, a little flexibility means that in the future if something doesn't happen, because it can't... it won't be the end of the world for Will and mean that he just doesn't sleep because X,Y,Z didn't happen.

Absolutely! Throughout the day, other than a relatively regular feeding schedule (because I have to do a combination of nursing and pumping, long story) I keep things pretty loose schedule-wise. It's really only the night time bed routine I like to have some regularity with so that he can work on putting himself to sleep. Thankfully, he's a really easy babe.
