Checklist? While looking at homes...

Hi!

I'm just wondering if anyone has come across a checklist for looking at homes?  Sort of a way to recall/take notes on what you liked and disliked as you walked through each room and whether or not it met your preferences?  DH and I could always create a list of our own but it's be much easier if we could use one that's pre-made.

Thanks!

  • Here's one I found:

    Search for "house hunting checklist".

However, a lot of what was on this list is on the house listing anyhow.  a chunk of this you'll get if your realtor prints them out for you.  Then I'd jot down notes as you go through - what did you like/not like.  Interesting features you dont' want to forget.

Past that - you and your DH need to know what you want!  A generic checklist can't give you that.  What is a dealbreaker, what's important but not a dealbreaker- that kind of thing.

For us, a MINIMUM of 1.5 baths was a must.  Only 1 bath?  Dealbreaker.  We wanted a backyard for DS to play in.  A house w/ only a super steep hill in back?  Dealbreaker. We would have preferred a garage, but we found a house w/ a carport.  Garage was important, but not a dealbreaker.  A fixer upper was a dealbreaker for us too.

    And so forth.

  • Oh yeah, we have a pretty detailed list of wants vs. needs.  We are relocating from Las Vegas to Seattle(area).  We've learned a lot from our current "starter" home, so I'm excited to see how it changes our house hunt from the first time around.  =)  Thanks for the link!

  • I took lots of photos and that helped.  A friend of mine would video tape as she went through and narrated along the way.

  • We made our own list of wants/needs and prioritized them. I'd highly suggest doing this first. It really helped us focus. Our realtor asked for this prior to choosing homes to show us. We also discussed it with her to ensure we were being reasonable given our budget.

As pp mentioned, take notes during or shortly after the showing and then later compare each home to your list. It made it easy to stay on course vs. getting easily swayed by say, a fabulous kitchen, when the neighborhood wasn't as good.

  • I like the idea of prioritizing your needs.  Only look at homes that have your must haves, if possible.  Then narrow down based on your wants.  I found that some of our wants carried more weight than others.  I tried to make a kind of checklist but in the end I knew what I wanted and what I didn't like, and when we found "the" house I was very sure it was the right one.

  • If you have an iPhone there are some apps for that. :) I'm sorry I can't think of their names off the top of my head but you can take photos of the house and store your notes on different houses. Just search the app store and you should find some. I lose lists but I always have my phone with me.
