Stupid question (washcloth-related)

Is there a difference between washcloths you use for washing people and washcloths you use for wiping down counters, etc? When I was still living with my mom, there was a really big difference in terms of fluffiness mostly between the two, but I don't know whether that was a matter of age/use or actual quality between them.

I'm asking mostly because I just bought the regular kind of washcloths (if there is a secret other kind that I don't know about) and they keep leaving fuzzies everywhere, making them not the best for cleaning. I just recently moved, though, so I don't have any old washcloths or clothes that I can use as a rag; I got rid of all of the garbage-y stuff in the moving process.

My sincerest apologies for asking such a massively stupid question.

Re: Stupid question (washcloth-related)

  • For cleaning, I prefer non-fuzzy cloths.  I actually get them from the auto section of Walmart.  They are essentially two pieces of t-shirt fabric sewn together.  Another option are the cheap wash cloths...usually the less expensive the less fuzzy.
  • Thanks! I'll have to check out the auto section.
  • I use cloth diapers for cleaning.  The thin ones, not the thicker ones.  They leave no fuzzies.  For washing in the shower, we use the puffy net sponge things and they go in the dishwasher once a week because even though they don't look it, the germaphobe in me says they're as nasty as a dishwashing sponge.
  • You can buy packaged terry-cloth rags, or I sometimes like to use the kitchen dish cloths for cleaning because they don't leave fuzzies.  My favorite is still paper towels though.

  • I get some from the dollar store. They are usually in a 20-pack and are thin and a bit rougher...they are for cleaning. I wouldn't use "normal" washcloths...it would get annoying!
  • Thanks everyone! I thought there was probably a different kind or something that I was missing, but I also kind of thought that the ones I was used to were just old and all of the fuzz had worn off by then.

I'll definitely check out your suggestions; hooray for not leaving lint on everything!

  • I use the same type of washcloths for both, but our bathroom washcloths are better quality/condition than our cleaning ones.  When bathroom ones get too worn, they get retired, but i also have some cheaper ones that i bought for cleaning.  I don't have a problem with fuzzies, except cleaning glass.  For that i use non-terry cotton (old t-shirt, flannel, etc.).  I can't stand microfiber, so i don't use that for anything.
