So the President was in my city today...

He spoke at the YMCA I used to go to before I got married and ate at a teeny little restaurant in M's home town. It's kinda weird the venues he picked, but it's still kinda cool that he was in places I know (though I'm not a fan of his politics).

  • That's cool, though I'm sure traffic sucked.  Every time GWB came to Ft. Campbell Army Base (10 miles south of my hometown), he would request some burgers from Ferrell's.  It's the greasy, hole-in-the-wall burger joint in town that's been opened since the 1920's, and he loved it.  When he was there doing a conference for senior citizens, he had Mrs. Ferrell on stage with him and she brought him burgers.

I think politicians should always make a point to visit real people in their real environments to get a better sense of the territory they're running.  Helps keep them connected.

  • That's so cool! I agree with Liz, I think it's important for politicians to get out and see people across the country... that being said I seriously doubt Steven Harper will be coming to my hometown anytime soon, he's too busy kissing the asses of everyone in the east.

  • When President Obama was in Eugene, OR for a rally during the campaign, he ate a little local ice cream parlor and just met with random people on the street. It was very personable and super cool.

The Oregon primary is so late, that usually we aren't that important voting wise, so candidates hardly ever have many rallies here. The 2008 Democratic Candidate race between Obama and Hillary Clinton was so close that we were actually relevant, and so we had tons of rallies, and most of them were small "town meeting" style. It was really something to see Obama interact with people on a smaller level (I went to two big rallies and a small town meeting one - HUGE difference in the speaking style and topics covered).

    My little loves
