I think i'd shared on a FB thread that i had a very close friend who was TTA for medical reasons, and got pregnant accidentally. She had to wait until week 11 to test, and results take 2 weeks.
She heard late last week that the fetus, as feared, has the same fatal-to-fetus-and-life-threatening-to-mother disease that they'd discovered with her first 2 pregnancies (terminated week 20 and then week 16) and now she has to terminate again at week 14.
Remember when we all learned about how recessive traits, with 2 parents, can result in (on average) 1 in 4 chances developing the disease? Between these 3 pregnancies, and their IVF 4 years ago, which produced 11 embryos, 7 of which had the disease, 3 wound up carriers, and one was free-and-clear, that is a total of 10 out of 14 chances resulting in the disease, whereas the statistical odds should be 3.5. So sad.
They did successfully implant twins with the IVF 4years ago, one of the carriers and the one free-and-clear embryos from that harvesting. They had already decided they were done with kids, and this was just a painful reminder that they need a much more infallable TTA strategy (which her H has already made an appt for -- between vasectomy for him and staying on the pill for her, they should be covered).
I just feel so badly for them to have to go through the heartbreak of it all, all over again.
