FB status

late yesterday afternoon I ran across this fb status.

Isn't this Breast Cancer fad getting a little out of hand? I'm all for raising money for Breast Cancer research/treatment but maybe we should focus on Cancer in general or more than just one type, especially when it mainly effects one gender. I guess it isn't "popular" to support colon cancer (Deadliest non-tobacco linked cancer) or prostate cancer research/treatment. Maybe we just think it is "cute" to wear "I love boobies" bracelets or maybe I'm just missing something.

6 people liked the status and then these are the comments below

comment 1:  Well my granddaddy had breast cancer when he died....so not just for woman!    comment 2 from original poster:  Well, it is very rare for men. 40,000 deaths from women in a year compared to 450 for men. My point isn't that people don't get it. My point is that there is more than just Breast Cancer out there and some that are more deadly.   comment from 1st poster: Very true!   comment 2: I agree Nathan. It is great to bring awareness to causes and support them, but we need to focus on all illnesses and not devote time to just one.   comment 3: Agreed, Nathan.   comment 4:  I think that we will eventually have every month dedicated to a cause of some sort, so I'm sure the time is coming that we'll have a Colon Cancer awareness month, or even a Prostate Cancer awareness month... Or maybe even a Cancer Awareness quarter... bottom line, I think the reason breast cancer awareness is being pushed so much is because it is one of the ones that can be detected sooner if all women would self check each month (most of us still don't remember to do that) and I think that's probably why this particular cancer is being pushed more than others right now. But yes, a lot of people are wearing pink and don't even know what it means. My dad teaches at a county high school and he asked the football players in his class why they thought they were wearing pink for, and they didn't know, they just have seen NFL players doing it so they thought it was the "cool" thing to do. But we have to admit, promoting "boobs" is more attractive that colons or prostates (not to undermine their importance) it's just how our society seems to work these days.   comment from original poster: Very true Sheila.   I so bad wanted to say colon cancer awareness is in March and if you feel that strongly about it then please join a organization to get the word out. But until then please do not talk bad about a organization/charity that has done alot of hard work to get the awareness out there.

Re: FB status

  • There's also a prostate cancer awareness month. My grandad died of it and every time they have awareness for it in Safeway I always donate.

I do agree though - the whole status update thing for breast cancer awareness is a bit overdone. I think a simple status about breast cancer would get the point across.

  • I actually agree that the whole breast cancer thing has gotten way more publicity than other types of cancers. And I do think that it is because it is more marketable than other types of cancer. I have a friend who is very passionate about this and got alot of slack because she essentially said the same thing, that it should be about all types of cancer, not just one.

And I have heard alot of not nice things about the Susan G Komen foundation, so I am sure that plays a part in my issue with the whole pink thing.

  • There;s a big susan g komen backlash going on these day..I'm all for money for research, but as I have a 28 year old friend litterally dying from this disease as I type this I wish there was more out there to help patients get through day to day challenges and expenses. There's no reason anyone should have to compromise their treatment plans b/c of money when organizations are rasing billions of dollars and still havn't figured out a better way to get ALL woman tested when so many are getting so sick so young b/c it's marketed as a disease for those over 40. i dont think people realize that all that money komen raises is only for research while people die b/c they simply can't afford to continue treatments as their Drs. recommend...

    **steps off soap box**

I know this isn't exactly the point of this post, but it's something that's been bugging me a lot lately.

  • I completely understand everyone's points and not that I do not agree with it. It also brings this to the for front of what we as women should be doing. I agree it may have gotten out of hand but it still draws attention to it.

I guess I was not caught up with all the Susan G Komen controversy and I can tell you that the originial poster was not either. He is a asse and I bet that blinded me.

Tiff - is this the friend you were telling us about a few months ago? I will add her to my prayer list.

Yes. She was Dx in April, given 3-6 months, it was already in her brain and is now in her spine and kindeys. It's been 6 months and she's doing ok..the Brain is under control, but since it's in her spine it's just spreading to her other organs one at a time. Who knows how much time she has, but she just had to stop traveling to MD anderson as often b/c living a split life between here and Houston is just crazy expensive, so they are doing what they can for her locally, but it's not the best form of treatment. We just went to a big benifit for her over the weekend. She and her family were able to attend and they raised over $5000. I know they were very releaved!

  • Wow, so much ignorance in some comments on your friend's FB.

But, I do have to agree with what Mel is saying here.  Where's the love when other organiations need it?

I know I had a friend who was diagnoised with a very rare form of eye cancer and she went to MD anderson and with treatments they were able to remove it all.

That is so sad and shocking about your friend. I mean I know cancer can get to you anytime and at any age but you just never really think it will hit someone so young and that has so much life ahead of them. Like Kellie's DH he was young when he got diagnosed.

I hope your friend is comfortable and not in alot of pain.

She isn't in much pain and usually responds to chemo really well. She only had one round so far that made her sick. It's really a gift that she's not suffering through treatments.

Prostate Cancer Awareness month is June...ties in with Father's Day.

I think that October was the first "awareness" month, and the issue for me is that a LOT of companies have discovered that they can make a lot of money if they just make pink things to sell in October...even if they donate zero money.

Breast cancer is definitely still an important disease to think about and raise money for...but there's still so much to be done for cancer research (in general) and support of those who are fighting the battle.  Let's not forget Jill and Ken...both of whom lost their battles at very young ages!

ITA Carrie. I think that is what makes it so hard for me. And while some of them do donate, it is all to "research" while the ones that are impacted by the disease have to struggle. And SBK makes tons of money. I am not saying that the awareness should not be there, but it should not be a marketing ploy for companies (i.e. the NFL, to make multiple pink hats for people to buy) to make them money.

I have been thinking about this a lot lately and wonder what would happen if I were to get breast cancer and had to go through chemo/radiation. What would my family do if I couldnt work, what would DH and the kids do?
