Invitations for a Christmas Open House

DH and I are hosting our first Christmas open house and I'm wondering when I should send out invitations.  We're having it on December 18th.  I really want to get them out before Thanksgiving, but I don't know how early is too early.  TIA!

Re: Invitations for a Christmas Open House

  • I'd put the word out to friends now, then mail the actual invites the Friday after Tday.  That's 24 days before the party.
  • I agree to put the word out now, but I'd put them in the mail the weekend before Tday.  Holiday mail can take a little time plus people may start to wonder if the party is still on.  In my mind there is no such thing as too early with holidays.

I agree with this. With work parties, work parties and family get togethers - get the word out verbally or via social networking. Then send invites soon.

  • I was discussing this with DH, and now he thinks that we should have the party a week earlier (December 11th).  I'm really unsure about this b/c that's right before my birthday and I don't want people to think I'm throwing myself a birthday party.  I also have a big pet peeve about lumping my birthday with Christmas.  I also feel that the 11th is just too early.  I am in the Christmas spirit the day after Thanksgiving, but I understand that others may not be.  So which day should I have it?  The 11th or the 18th?

  • To your original question, I thought about it and I actually mailed my invites last year on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, that way they got there some time that weekend.  For me, there's just something about receiving a Christmas invite before Tday that irks me.

Regarding the date, a few thoughts. (Sorry, I think in bulleted lists, lol, it's a problem!)

    1) At first, I thought the 18th was too late, but the way Christmas falls this year, there's a full week of work btwn the 18th and Christmas, so people will probably be in town.

    2) The 11th is definitely not too early.  That's just 2 weeks before Christmas.

    3) Next, I don't think anyone will think you're throwing yourself a bday party.  You didn't say who the guests will be, but if they're social acquaintances, many of them may not know your bday at all.  And if you don't market it as a bday party, I can't imagine anyone thinking that's what it is.

    4) My bday is Dec 22, so I definitely get what you're saying.  But at the same time, it's a part of life and eligible weekends fall where they do.

So you think the 11th would be better than the 18th??

I think that I have no real opinion :P  My point was simply to assuage your concerns about the 11th.  The more important thing than stranger on the internet's opinion is to talk to your friends and see what their openings are.  They might all have plans for a holiday musicale or something.

  • Thanks Smile  I always worry about talking about holidays too far in advance b/c I don't like getting side eyed for it.  I think I'll send out an email today asking about everyone's plan for those two weekends.

  • We're hosting a cocktail party on the 10th. I sent out a save-the-date on Facebook yesterday, and will have paper invites in the mail by the 10th of November, so it gives them a month's notice formally.
