I'm new to sewing and have been using my mom's singer stylist from the 1970's to practice on. I've taken one class at Joann's and plan to take more in the future. I'm looking for a machine just to make simple dresses and shirts for my kids. I really liked the Viking they had us use in the class, but I don't have $600 for it. I spoke with the lady in the sewing shop and she recommended this one. Anyone heard anything good/bad about it? Most of the reviews seem good.

They have it on sale for $299 in store, but it's cheaper on amazon. If I bought it in store I'd get all the classes that will teach me how to use it. I'd like to get it in store, but DH would be buying it for my birthday and he's cheap. He'd rather get it on amazon and then have me pay to take another class. What do you ladies think?
Re: What do you think of this sewing machine?
I am not a fan of modern Singers. I much prefer Brothers.

I had a Singer for about a year before it broke on me...big time repairs, too and it was never the same.
I bought a Brother machine not too long after that and I don't regret it a bit.

I've only ever used Brother machines and I have the older version of the one linked here- I love it.

I actually have two Singer Machines and no problems - my serger and embroidery machine are Singers. My regular machine is a Bernina that I inhertied from Nana and I do love it. Before that I had this Kenmore which has a Janome equivalent and I would HIGHLY recommend this machine

ETA - I just realized both of those links do not have the machines in stock...sorry
Kenmore machines are good too. I have one that I got about 6 months ago upon MIL's recommendation. I love it! It was a little more than $200 when I got it.
I was thinking of getting a new one when my old machine broke down. When I took it in to the sewing machine shop, they said what I had was better than any of the ones I could buy in my price range. Since they sell the darn things and talked me out of buying, I figure I should take their advice. You might want to talk to your local sewing shop people and let them know exactly what you have now...
and now I see that you said you did talk to sewing shop people, but were they real sewing shop people or Joanne's people? Because I think I would trust a repair type sewing place far more than Joannes.
