I have the original iphone and am finally eligible for an upgrade, options are $99 for the "old" 4 and $199 for the 4s. The frugal part of me says just go with the 4, the wish to be cool with the newest stuff part of me says splurge for the 4s.
Any comments on either to sway my decision?

Re: iphone 4/4s users
If you opt for the 4s, I'd wait at least a month. Let all of the techies figure out the bugs in the system and wait for Apple to remedy them.
Tossing this in: the iPhone 5 will be debuted next summer. It was the only project worked on by Steve Jobs before his passing.
Is the $99 iphone 4 the 8 gig one? I think the 16 gig one is $149. The 4S is going to be 16 gigs. I would be concerned with filling a 8gig, but that is just me.
I had the same decision. I decided to go with the 4S for a couple reasons. One, it was only $50 more for a processor that I think it twice as fast. That was the problem I was having with my droid. It had gotten to the point the processor couldn't keep up so I would often just have a blank screen. The 4S also has a better camera. It is a really nice camera. And it has Siri, which allows you to do a lot with voice commands. I haven't used it yet, but I've heard good things. But I wouldn't let something like that decide for you.
I figured it was worth the $50 extra dollars for a phone that won't get slow as quickly.
fwiw i never fill my 8gig. not even close
what do you have on there?!
holy poo
Ahhh I have 3000 pics but only a couple albums. I'm all about pandora.
I have an 8g itouch and it's almost always full - and I have the older one without a camera! I guess between my music, audiobooks and apps, it fills up pretty quickly for me. I can't imagine how full it would be if I had the ability to take pictures too. I can't wait to be able to upgrade my stupid phone to the iphone next year.
oh, and i'm easily at 12-13gb on my phone . . . with only about 20% of my music
Ditto. With things like Pandora and Spotify, there is no need to store 293847293478 gigs of music on your phone, IMO. Andplusalso, in my iPhone experience (I've had each version) the more sh!t you pack on them, the slower and crapier they become. So just because you can store 16 gig worth of crap on it, doesn't really mean you should. Your performance will suffer.
I'm telling you. Wait for the Nexus Prime. It is going to sh!t on even the iPhone 5. It's screen is ginormous and it's just a better phone all together. $199, too. So it won't be out of control expensive.
My sister was asking us the same question...I would probably go for the newer phone (I had the 3g so it is infinitely better!)
The processor and camera are better plus it is alway better to have more space-I have a lot of apps and pics and my 8 gig was close to full.

My 32 gig is full....
I cannot wait for this. Although I'm curious about the Razr too. I'm assuming it will be out next month, since that's when the new Android OS is supposed to be out? We're due for phone upgrades at the end of November, so i'm hoping it will be available then.
