Professional Opinion

Wedding ring or no wedding for interview? My CW that is single, wears a wedding set to interviews. She thinks it can be seen as a sign of loyal employee. What is your take on this?

Re: Professional Opinion

  • If you're married, wear a wedding ring.

    If you're not, don't.

How would you explain that if it ever came up later on?

  • I agree, but numerous amounts of my colleagues occasionally wear/don't wear their rings.

  • I was pretty much going to say what CD said. I have a CW that stopped wearing her wedding set a few months ago. After a week my curiosity got the best of me and since we're friendly I asked her what happened to her rings. People notice things like that. (my cw's rings had been sent off for cleaning.)

  • I debated this when I interviewed. I ultimately wore my rings, but I very much considered not because I didn't want to take the chance of them thinking I'm married and ready to get knocked up, take maternity leave, and not return. I wanted to be seen as someone who took their career seriously and unfortunately the above situation (which happens frequently) ruins credibility for the rest of us married women of childbearing age.

I can see going either way. If it comes up later after you get a job offer (though I can't imagine someone being uncouth enough to ask "Why weren't you wearing your rings in your interview?") I'd just say sometimes you go without. NBD.

It is unfortunate that a woman would be viewed this way in an interview and you actually had to debate the issue.  This thought has never even crossed my mind. Perhaps I live in a professional bubble ...

This is just cray cray lol.

I can see how either side can see the potential for discrimination and there have been times when I've questioned the above bolded part as well. I also have to agree that leaving your set at home is one thing, but wearing a set when you're not married is in fact a wee bit cray cray. lol

  • If you're married, wedding band...leave the e-ring at home.

I read an article probably about a month ago about the subconscious bias against hiring women with large e-rings.  One, it can be distracting in an interview, it could also lead the hiring manager to believe the person doesn't "need" the job based on the size, etc.

I can understand this point if someone has a Kardashion sized e-ring. I would find that distracting.
