Decor WWYD

We're hoping to have confirmation that we're getting the apartment we put an application in on this weekend.

Since we're renting, we can't change the main, physical features of the apartment, one of which I hate.

There is a very large (4' wide x 3' tall) mirror framed into the wall over the area where the bed would most logically go.  Pictured below is the master from a similar condo in the complex that is listed for sale.

The mirror in the apartment I'd be renting is where the poster above their bed is:

Our dresser also has a mirror that is mounted above it, so the mirrors would face each other in our room.  This freaks me out and I hate it design wise, so I am looking for suggestions as to what to do with the mirror above the bed.

My only thought thus far has been to use that frosting type of vinyl, then do a large monogram.

Anyone want to help?

  • Yay! I hope you get it:)

I like the frosting w/monogram idea.

The only other thing I can think of that wouldn't permanently change or ruin the mirror is doing a wall of fabric behind your bed. I did this once when I was still single and I loved it.

    Kind of like this:

Let me brainstorm and see if I can come up with anything else:)

  • Here's another pic that's more contemporary:

You could also do a fabric headboard, but it might look a little awkward depending on how big you'd need to make it to cover up the mirror?

  • I like the idea of curtains behind- but I feel like it is going to be a lot of fabric- the dimensions of the room are 14' x 12'- with a 14' wall behind the bed.

The entire side of the building is windows, just like the one pictured, so we'll be transferring our current blackout curtains to that wall too.

    Is that too much?

    I don't think it's too much.

You don't have to do the whole length of the wall behind the bed, if you don't want to. You could just do so many feet beyond the mirror on each side.

Another idea...you could cover up the mirror with cute wallpaper or fabric and maybe get some wood trim to frame it out...treat it like a piece of art?

Yeah, that's a good idea too.  The mirror has a trim frame already, maybe I can just loosen and stick the ends in, or maybe I'll just frame it out even larger.

Now, would you do a coordinate to the bedding or would you do something matchier?

Our duvet is charcoal on gray damask:

and we have accent pillows in 3 textures and colors of gray and our shams are gray and sort of tile printed- like this only larger scale:

What kind of fabric would you recommend?

  • Cute bedding.

Hmm. It's hard to say without seeing it all together, but I think I'd introduce a totally different fabric in the same color way. I think if you did another damask or tile print it might not match well enough and just look off.

Maybe a vine-y floral kind of like this?

  • I like Rach's wall of fabric idea but I think i'd use a solid color. Or if you find some fabric you really like, you could sort of wrap the mirror and frame arond it like Rach said but instead of wallpaper since that's more permanent.

Have you asked if you could remove it?

Baby, you've got the sort of eyes that tell me tales...

Yeah, it is hard to explain without a picture, but they said it is actually a hole in the drywall with the mirror set in and framed with decorative moulding.

  • I like the idea of just frosting it. Your furniture is oversized (right?) so those + extra curtains, I feel, might be too much for the space.

Plus frosting sounds like the much less expensive option. :)

My furniture only looks oversized in my current bedroom- it is actually fairly traditional and normal sized.

I'm a little worried the frosting applique (since I can't alter the actual glass) is going to look cheesy.

  • I think as long as you do a reverse etch (so that the majority of the mirror is the vinyl as opposed to the mirror) then it won't be noticeable.
