NROLFW Check-in?

A few of us expressed interest in doing this a few weeks ago. Who has started? I finally got going last week (had to join a better gym) and have done three workouts so far. I'm pretty impressed with how much of a workout I feel I'm getting just doing 5 exercises. My legs are pretty much perpetually sore and to sit on a toilet I have to kind of fall on it. LOL. I've decided a massage will be my reward when I finish Stage 1.

Anyone else????

Re: NROLFW Check-in?

  • I need to get someone to show me how to properly do the lifting so that I don't injure myself AND don't make an a$$ out of myself in front of everyone at the free weights.

Anyone want to do this? ;)

  • What gym do you go to? Do you have the book? They are really, really specific about the movements and where to hold the weights, etc.

  • I haven't started reading. I fail. I think I'm putting it off so as to avoid looking like an ass at the gym.
  • Ok, so I have a (possibly stupid) question.  H and I watched the Reebok Crossfit games last night for a little bit...maybe it was two nights ago, I can't remember.  Some (not all) of the girls on there had enormous, cut legs, square jaws, not an ounce of body fat, eight pack stomachs and large, muscular arms.  If women don't bulk up, what the hell happened to them?!  Is this just a result of their body type?  A supplement?

  • BoyMom, I don't know, but lucky for me I eat way too much to be that cut up. ;)

Okla, I've gotten the book before from the library and looked it through. I work out at the wellness center at my place of employment.

Most likely, supplements and/or steroids, super heavy lifting and a super clean diet. I drink too much beer to have a six-pack and I'm cool with that. One thing about NROLFW, the exercises all have movements you do in real life. No bicep curls or tricep curls, etc. So, you're not building up muscles for vanity, but for stregnth by using movements from everyday life. I don't know if that makes sense. The author explains it very well in the book.

Ah, then I can't go with you and show support by also feeling foolish.

I can bring you as a guest sometime if you ever want. It's only $5, and I'd be happy to pay that.

Maybe we have a different definition of "bulk up." This is Annie Thorisdottir - winner of the 2011 crossfit games...

She looks toned and fit and muscular, but not "bulky" (to me).

ETA: I know this wasn't the point of this thread so sorry for jacking it!

  • I finished Stage 2 this past Saturday, and I'm going to start Stage 3 on Thursday. Holey moley that stage had lots of squats and lunges. My thighs have never looked better in my life!

I ended it deadlifting 125#. If I had pushed myself a little harder in Stage 1, I could have made it up to 135# so I could use the 45# "big boy" weight plates. Oh well, I'll get there soon enough.

I had never lifted weights or even belonged to a gym before I got this book.  Between the descriptions in the book and watching videos online, I was able to learn the exercises without anyone showing me- though I would have been much more comfortable if someone had. There's a forum dedicated to NROLFW here that has lots of discussions about the exercises and links to videos showing proper form. The videos helped me the most! Plus I always practice at home with my light dumbbells to figure out how to do a new exercise before doing it at the gym for the first time.

We should meet up at somebody's gym and have a Nestie lifting GTG.  Cool I bet Dani would critique our form for us!

  • The girl H and I were like "whoa" over was the black girl from Chicago...Elisabeth something or other.  And while I understand the appeal of the girl Tavia listed and don't think it's gross, it is not what I want to look like or personally find attractive in another woman.  I think I just like a softer, curvier look while still being somewhat lean.  Like ScarJo, Jessica Alba, JLo, Britney, Hallie Berry.

I totally get what you're saying. When I get serious about lifting weights I look "bulky" and because I'm tall and have a large frame that equals looking more masculine. I also much prefer the longer, leaner looking muscles.

  • I just finished up with Stage 2 as well. I have a Chemistry test this week as well as launching a huge brand new program at work so I've decided I'll start Stage 3 next week. In the month of doing stage 2, I lost over an inch off of my waisteline- so I'm cool with that! My arms also lost a little bit of the fat that was on them which is a goal - I'm really wanting to define them a little more.

As for "bulking".... Boymom- you would never look like that girl. You, my dear, just aren't built that way.

Seriously though, Ginger (or whoever), if you want to come work out together some time, I'd love it. I can show you the moves for the phase that you are going to do and make sure you are confident with them. Then we can go for a post workout beer.. or vodka tonic if we're being "good". :)

Me three! I can usually do any day except Wednesday.

  • I want in on the GTG, too. I'll be ready to start Stage 2 next month, so would love some pointers for the new exercises. The only days I'm never free are Monday and Tuesday, otherwise I can get off work with some notice.
