I didn't know if this applies to anyone else, or if it does and I'm just late to the game but wanted to pass along the info
. If you have US federal direct student loans/servicing, they recently made changes to their website and people who manage their accounts online have to create a new account management login and set-up payment options again.
I tried to do this today, and because I have a foreign address on my account, I had to call and speak to a representative vs. being able to set up my account myself. After much waiting on hold and confusion from the call reps, I was informed that borrowers with foreign addresses are no longer able to access account information online or make payments online at this time. I was advised that I can either send a check or money order by mail from now on (real convenient for foreign payers, huh?) or switch to a US-based addressed. No problem, I just put my folks address on record, but again, couldn't do that online because of the foreign thing, they had to update it manually in their system.
Long story short, if you're in a similar situation to me, you may want to give them a call.
Re: Vent and PSA - Federal Direct Loan Servicing
That makes no sense at all! Why would they make it impossible for people abroad to access it online when they are the ones that need it the most?! Ah, some people's logic amazes me sometimes...
I'm glad you were able to use your parents' address.
Thanks for the info.
Once again proves my theory: a globalized world is BS!
