"Seen" Instead of "Saw"

People in Knoxville say "seen" a lot when it should be "saw" and it's driving me crazy. It's actually more the surrounding counties, but every day at least twice a day someone will call and say, "I seen a house on XYZ street. How much is it?".

This has become my latest peeve. I'm sure I say things that sound funny to everyone here, but holy cow this "seen" thing is on my last nerve!

Re: "Seen" Instead of "Saw"

  • lol....   I hear that a lot too!
  • Oh my, I HATE that.  Seriously.  It makes me judge a person immediately as uneducated if I hear that come out of his/her mouth.  I know I'm not perfect with my own grammar, but really that one irks me to no end.
  • People here do that too, but more common in certain areas of the county. :P It drives me crazy! They also say "I asks them a question." UGH!

Ditto! One of my older brothers says it all the time and it drives me crazy, especially because he got great grades in English and has a college degree!

  • In my old neighbourhood that was common. Except they'd add "been" in front of it. Such as: "I been seen that on tv" Annoying. I'm trying to be less of a grammar snob, but it still irks me!

That is way worse. That would put me over the edge.

Maybe it's just that I hear this one so much with my current profession, but it just gets under my skin.

Even more to the point I just got a call and the person said "I seen the ad in today's paper about that house yall selling". Gah!!!

  • Oh that is so annoying!! I can not stand when people add an "s" to a word. Around here every store gets an "S" added to it!! "Best Buys" "Giants" "Targets"
