should I switch him to elecare?

Ben's on alimentum now - but within the last few weeks, he's getting really fussy after feedings, cries, ect....nothing makes him happy. Also, now he is having horrible excema - all over his cheeks, chest, ears, ect....nothing is making it better (humidifier, face cream, hydrocortisone cream, aquaphor) we havent used new detergent or anything, no new soap, ect....- I think he's showing a food intolerance but what is throwing me for a spin is that its starting now - and not like it did with Owen right off the bat. I ask the pedi - he says "see how it goes, you can switch him if you want but its better if he stays on the alimentum"

So, I have 6 cans of elecare that I ordered when he was born 'just in case'. THoughts? would you switch? Try it out? Give it more time on alimentum?

(he's on alimentum now because when he had breast milk he had HORRIBLE diahrea (sp?) and was breaking out - it got better instantly when we took him off bm and just on alimentum)

I just feel bad because he is scratching his excema and jacking up his face.

Re: should I switch him to elecare?

  • I would switch him. Give it a week and if you don't see a marked improvement then switch back since the other is so much cheaper. A milk or soy intolerance comes out in rashes and exema.
  • Poor little pumpkin.

I would try what J said.

  • B had horrible reaction to his formula and even had terrible excema and baby acne.  Is Ben on any meds yet?  The only thing that helped us was 2 different meds and Alimentum liquid, which we later switched to Nutramigen as he got older.  We had to do Alimentum liquid, though.  There is something in the powder version of Alimentum that is terrible for reflux and food allergen babies.   You can try Elecare since you have it, but if he's not on any meds, I would try something if your pedi is open to it.

And for excema, we went to a dermatologist to get some face stuff.  It helped a lot.

The good news is we have no food allergies now that he's older and his skin is clear as ever!

  • I'd try the elecare.  Those are all signs that he is reacting and Alimentum still has the proteins in regular formula, just broken down further.

    Poor little guy :(

This. Kolbe reacted to the alimentum and did fine on the elecare.
