Wal-Mart on Rockville Pike

Ugh. I am not a Wal-Mart fan at all, so I was sad to read that they plan to open a store on Rockville Pike. It's going to displace Bagel City - I love that place!

As the daughter of a small business owner, I hate seeing small, independent businesses kicked out by national retailers like Wal-Mart. I have a serious problem with a lot of Wal-Mart's corporate policies, and traffic on the Pike is already a total nightmare. Plus, there's a Target right there already!

Re: Wal-Mart on Rockville Pike

  • Agreed (although I no longer live in MoCo).  Have you ever been to the Milestone Center in Germantown?  They have a Target AND a Wal-Mart AND a Kohl's all in the same shopping center - talk about overkill!

  • As if traffic on the Pike wasn't bad enough!

  • Methinks the people seeking out the big box experience were well-served by existing stores before Wal-Mart thought about moving in.

  • They're also planning to open a store in Aspen Hill in 2013 I think. Next to Home Depot where BAE used to be.

ETA: ok, after reading the article, i now know exactly where it's going. bagel city wasn't triggering. how the heck is there room for walmart parking in that little shopping center??? the one across the street where TJ's is is already a nightmare. i guess they figure people will overflow to the garage for target?

  • Ugggghhhh.  I totally agree with you.  This sucks.  I can't.stand. Walmart.  Where is Bagel City going to go?!  I love that place!  This move doesn't make sense- a Target is like 10 feet from there.  Walmart is definitely NOT needed on the Pike, it's congested enough as it is.

  • The parking in that lot is pretty crazy at night when we've gone to TGI Fridays
  • Yikes! I don't even live there anymore and that annoys me. That area is so crowded already - and the Target parking garage can barely handle the Target traffic - I can't imagine it with overflow from Wal-Mart!
  • I'm pretty sure Target is not going to want to let Walmart shoppers use its parking garage!

I think walmart is going to need its own garage.

  • I heard WalMart is planning to open within a couple years in Tyson's Corner, too. That should make traffic even better for the already way congested area.
