Resume Question

How do you work volunteer experience into your resume?  Do you list it under work experience or give it it's own separate section?

Re: Resume Question

  • Personally I would make it a separate section if you have a multiple items. That way you draw attention to it, saying Hey! Look what ELSE I do! (besides work)

But if you have one, maybe two things to include, I would put it with work experience, 3 or more I'd make separate.

  • I have it in an activities section. I only put what is relevant to that job though.

I'm applying for a legal assistant position, I was going to put my FRG leadership position in my resume.  I'd say it applies...I had to follow guidelines, organize, communicate.

    What do you think?

  • I put my volunteer work under Trainings and Qualifications. I mean, for most of the volunteer stuff you need training for it, right? I figure it fits and when I go in for interviews, it seems to stick out since I get asked about my other positions a lot.

  • Separate section, usually after work experience.
