anyone familiar with 'Kirby' vacuums?

This weekend we purchased an old Kirby vacuum cleaner and carpet shampooer from a neighbor's estate sale. Although I have seen these before, I was not familiar at all with the brand. They are those old vacuums which weigh a TON and can pick up pretty much anything.

My husband is thrilled, he says it is about a $500 dollar vacuum (Which is about right IF it was new, I looked it up online) and we got it for about $20.00. The problem is that it is far from new and probably needs some parts. Fixing it could cost up to $200.00.

I'm afraid to spend this much money on a vaccuum since we already have a cheapy one that does a fairly decent job. Has anyone owned one of these and can you tell me if it is worth the money??

I'm alright with a piece of junk that we spent $20.00 on just sitting in the garage, but if we spend another 200 and it still sits in our garage I am going to have issues.

Thanks in advance!

Re: anyone familiar with 'Kirby' vacuums?

  • I inherited one for my grandmother...i think it's worth the fix
  • It's heavy duty and hard core -- can definitely stand up against any vacuum. It's not cute and nimble and hip like the dyson, but it sure does suck.

If you can repair it for $50 or so, you're getting a good deal.

My Kirby is at least 25 years old. Maybe more.  It's been repaired 2 times that I know of, and totally worth it.

  • My mom's had one for the past 15 years, and it still works as well as it did 15 years ago.

  • Kirbys are fantastic quality vacuums. Take it to a dealer and see what they say.
  • We bought one used for about $200, used it for two or three years, then resold it for about $150.  The only reason I sold it was that I really needed something that had an attachment hose for getting into crevices or up in high corners.  The kirby had the capability, but you had to remove the entire head part of the machine to connect the hose.... it was too difficult for me. Otherwise, the vacuum itself was awesome.  If you can get it fixed for under $100, and the attachment thing isn't an issue for you, then I would do it.

Haha, I remember that. You have to like twist off this little piece and then the head comes off and you have to clip on the hose onto this bar. That was a PITA. I had forgotten.

  • My mom had 3 of them, I remember them growing up because they weighed a million pounds.  All 3 stopped working and are in the landfill right now.

I would get a repair quote to see how much it is to fix. If it is around $200 I would probably just junk it and get a Dyson, then you'd have a warranty too.

  • They sell the new Kirby's for about 2 grand, but you can get them lowered to about 1 grand. They have a lifetime warranty so I think people who sell them are kinda stupid. They are great vacuums but are heavy as hell. IDK if it would be worth fixing up.
