Vent and PSA - Federal Direct Loan Servicing

I didn't know if this applies to anyone else, or if it does and I'm just late to the game but wanted to pass along the info Smile. If you have US federal direct student loans/servicing, they recently made changes to their website and people who manage their accounts online have to create a new account management login and set-up payment options again.

I tried to do this today, and because I have a foreign address on my account, I had to call and speak to a representative vs. being able to set up my account myself. After much waiting on hold and confusion from the call reps, I was informed that borrowers with foreign addresses are no longer able to access account information online or make payments online at this time. I was advised that I can either send a check or money order by mail from now on (real convenient for foreign payers, huh?) or switch to a US-based addressed. No problem, I just put my folks address on record, but again, couldn't do that online because of the foreign thing, they had to update it manually in their system.

Long story short, if you're in a similar situation to me, you may want to give them a call.

Re: Vent and PSA - Federal Direct Loan Servicing

  • That makes no sense at all! Why would they make it impossible for people abroad to access it online when they are the ones that need it the most?! Ah, some people's logic amazes me sometimes...

I'm glad you were able to use your parents' address.

  • I know, right? It wouldn't have been a big deal for me if they had just sent notice by e-mail or mail a few weeks ago informing customers about the new policy on foreign addresses just so people have time to figure out how they want to handle it in the future. Instead, it took me two phones calls and about an hour of hold to find out. The first representative I talked to wasn't aware of the policy and had to check with a supervisor, it just seems like it was poorly handled all around.
  • Thanks for the info.

Once again proves my theory: a globalized world is BS!

  • That's ridiculous! And inconvenient to, it's like they don't want the money.
  • I'm in the US but I had a similar problem with a private loan I have. They changed the address to which one is supposed to mail payments, and I had a recurring bill pay set up through my bank. Of course they didn't tell anyone they were changing the address, and all of a sudden my bank payments were being returned unprocessed. This of course was MY fault and I had to pay late fees. Ugh.
