Moving to Austin...

http://mallorieowens.blogspot.com/2011/10/big-news.html

My husband and I are planning to move to Austin in January! I would really appreciate ideas on housing, etc. We are hoping to live on the South side of town in either a townhouse or house for rent. We prefer to rent from a person as opposed to a big rental company...

We have both been to Texas a lot (DH has lived there many times), but neither of us has been to Austin so I really appreciate your help! DH is a full-time musician who just released his new album and it is on radio all over the US and about to be on lots of TV shows...this is the reason for the move, we need to be somewhere that is better for his career.

TIA!

Re: Moving to Austin...

  • Welcome!

We don't live in South Austin, but I love that part of town. It's my dream to live off of S. Congress Ave, but I don't think we'll be able to afford that for a long while!

Our current rental is a private owner and we found it on Craigslist. You could also contact a few realtors to see if they can help you find a rental - a lot of landlords list their properties on Realtor.com, so that's another place to look.

    Good luck in finding something!

  • We live south and love it. It sounds like you guys will want to be close to downtown. Congress, south Lamar, and areas nearby have a lot of condos. There are pocket neighborhoods off William cannon. Good luck!
  • I live in South Austin, in a nice duplex. We found our place, which we rent from a couple, on Craigslist. However, I think we lucked out and since then I've noticed that it's hard to find a place online that isn't in an apartment complex or available through an apartment locating service. So you can try Craigslist but you might want to plan a visit down here and drive around neighborhoods you like, looking for "For Rent" signs. That's the method everyone I know recommends and has had the most luck with.

You could also check out Austin Home Search and search for rentals that way. I was obsessed with that website when we were thinking about moving last year and they have condos, duplexes, and houses.

    Good luck with your move!
