Yesterday while DD was lying on my lap quietly, I clipped her
fingernails. No problem. Then I noticed one or two of mine were a little
long, so I clipped them. I looked up and saw one of my fingernail
clippings had landed in her eye!!
She blinked and it went onto her lower eyelid, so I tried to pull it
away, but she blinked again and it went back onto her eye. Another blink
and it disappeared beneath the lower lid. I sat there for a second in
shock, then called the university children's clinic who said I had to
call the optometry clinic (thankfully I live about a 10 min walk away
from the university hospital complex!). They said to come in, so I did,
but 2 doctors looked non-invasively and couldn't see anything. They
assured me it had probably come out when I wasn't looking.
I went home. DH came home. He was doing tummy time with DD and I came out, looked at her, and gasped. The fingernail was once again visible right above her lower lid. Called the clinic again, went in, and it again took two doctors and a q-tip, but they finally got it out without needing to put her under (if they hadn't been able to get it out they would have had to). Thankfully it hadn't scratched her eye at all, which the drs said was a bit of a miracle, but she's now on antibiotic eyedrops for the next 5 days.
Serious mothering fail. I felt horrible and am never clipping my nails around her again.
Re: XP from TB: Mothering fail
Glad to hear that Baby is okay.
Dont beat yourself about it. I am sure things like that happen to everyone.
Don't worry too much. I'm sure every parent's first years are filled with these kind of lessons. Apparently the first time my dad clipped my fingernails when I was a baby, he went too short and my fingers were bleeding for awhile. He never did it again!
Glad it was just a close call and that everything's ok now.

That would have NEVER occurred to me as a possibility. Seriously, the odds for that to occur must be 0.0001%. You did a great job and were pro-active. I say mothering well done!
I can't believe that this happened! Sounds like you dealt with it well and so did your DD! I'm sure I'd of done a bit more freaking out.
Glad to hear that she's doing well.
ITA!
Ha! What are the chances?
Glad everything worked out and that she didn't get any scratches. You did everything right.
