acid reflux in babies

I know a few of you ladies had said at one point that your babies had acid reflux. I was just wondering what their symptoms were. I know before I had posted about LO spitting up really bad and that problem has got much better. Well just recently LO has started what looks like she is choking and turns beat red and arches her back. Its so scary. The pediatricians nurse told me to call back in a few days if it was still happening because it could be acid reflux. So you ladies who have experienced this, does this sound like it to you and how did your pediatrician treat it? Thanks!!

Re: acid reflux in babies

  • Yeah, A would spit up and swallow it again, and sometimes choke on it. Turn beet red, and basically scare the everliving crap out of us. So that part sounds the same. but A was also constantly uncomfortable, arching back all the time, crying all the time, will not sleep unless lying on an incline. all of this always worse after feedings.

Our Pedi reffered us to a Pedi GI who had us start thicking her bottles with rice cereal, started her on Prevacid,  and told us to change her feedings so she was having smaller bottles to cut back on the possiblility of her overeating in one sitting and the aggrivating her reflux. So we had to give her 4oz bottles instead of 6oz bottles and as a result she needed to be fed a little more often. We also experimented with a bunch of different formulas and eventually landed on switching her to Similac Alimentum (hypoallergenic formula).

  • M would do the spit up thing and swallow it and she would cry during EVERY feeding.  It didn't start until about 6 weeks.  She was just miserable all ways around.  The Pedi asked us VERY specific questions though...he said that some of the symptoms are the same as other issues.

In the end she took Zantac and from the first dose, she was back to my sweet M.

We also at the same time had to switch her formula...not b/c of the AR but found out she was allergic to Similac (she was getting blood in her stool)...she was on Nutramigen b/c of a milk protein allergy.  Seems she has outgrown it or mostly (she sometimes gets a red patch on her face after drinking milk)

  • A was diagnosed before she left the hospital at 2 weeks.  She had the spit up like the exorcist at EVERY feeding!  She lost a ton of weight, which I know is normal, but the doctors were very concerned.  She was put on Prevacid and we had to follow up with a pediatric GI.  We were told to put cereal in every bottle and also use mylicon drops in the bottle instead of in her mouth, that way it took out the air bubbles from the formula that we fed her.  We were lucky enough not to have to change formulas after she was put on one (I pumped for 5 weeks and then my supply tanked with all my stress) she was on Nestle GoodStart Gentle Ease and had no issues.  She stayed on Prevacid until she was 11 months and then was weaned slowly off of it.  We did try to wean a little earlier but it was a very unsuccessful attempt!

We had an unsuccessful wean at about 5 months...the doctor thought with eating food it would help.  It didn't.  We put her back on but he never increased the dosage even though she weighed more and DH and I eventually weaned her really really really slowly (not what pedi said) and it worked.  that was at about 10 months or so

  • My little one had it too. I believe in the more natural the better. Meds, formulas, cereals, just lead to more problems. I have also heard that putting cereal in the bottle is not good at all as it leads to overeating which leads to more spitting up. Baby cereal is so processed that we never used it all. I exclusively breastfed for 6+ mos (after that I continued breastfeeding and introduced fresh food like avocadoes and bananas), ate dairy free, had LO see a naturapathic doctor, we used homeopathic tablets, and LO wore a hazelwood necklace. The necklace helps with acid and digestion. For more info go to inspiredbyfinn.com or their fb page. I swear by their amber and hazelwood. Boy, what a great discovery for us! I found a discount code, IBF20, for 20% off. Hope this helps!
