Family Picture Clothing Ideas

Need some clothing suggestions for a group family photo (27 people). I'm trying to think of some suggestions to send my sister-in-law so I don't wind up in a denim tuxedo...(kidding, sort of)

ETA: Sorry if this has been asked a thousand times before!

Re: Family Picture Clothing Ideas

  • we did about 20 people last year in khaki pants/black shirts (I was worried about different shades of khaki but it turned out ok).  Also my immediate family did white shirts with blue jeans and it actually turned out very well b/c all the different shades of denim and styles of shirts looked nice.  But make sure everyone has a fairly new white shirt!! My dad's looked yellowish compared to the rest b/c it was older  :)
  • With that many people, I think it's easier to do something like tell everyone to wear jeans and a white shirt, or jeans and a black shirt, or whatever color so you semi coordinate instead of everyone showing up in a much of different, uncoordinated outfits.  IDK...not sure what the photog girls think about that!  :)

Or you could say everyone wears jeans, my little family will wear green shirts, sisters family will wear blue shirts, mom and dad will wear white, etc...so each individual 'family' would have a color assigned to them?

  • I really am not a fan of the whole everyone in white shirts and jeans or the similar looks, just my opinion. We did a full family picture last year and we told everyone to wear dark jeans, gray tops and if you're accessorizing or wearing an under shirt to use any color. It turned out great, mostly gray with pops of color. For example, my niece had a gray top and gray leggings with a little pink skirt, I wore jeans and a gray cardigan with a green top under it, my father in law wore jeans, a gray sweater and a blue top coming out of the top. The only rule was no white (the eye will naturally go to white before anything else, including faces).
  • Try not to do all white or all black..I had a big group wear all black, and some had really faded black shirts on and it was really hard to work with and looked terrible.... Try to go with a theme...say everyone wear jeans with a fall colored shirt, brown, yellow, orange, red. Or say everyone wear gray, navy, red or green if you want more Christmas colors, KWIM? I think gray, navy and gold/yellows would look awesome! And tell people not to be afraid of wearing plaid or other patterns in those same colors... I think everyone in a solid can look very blah sometimes. With that being said, you might want to make sure that one person from every family wears a pattern so that way you don't risk there being just one person wearing a really bold plaid and sticking out! :)

  • Thanks for all of the ideas! I really like the idea of gray with different accent colors (although this might be hard to explain to these people as they don't exactly like to think outside the box...) I guess the photographer told my sister-in-law that the 'in' colors right now are teal and brown, so she'd thought about girls in teal and guys in brown. But then again, I would guess there's lots of varying shades of teal.
  • Jewel tones would be along those lines: teal, dark purple, fushia, bright blue, jade, etc.  With gray and dark jeans, I think that would look really good!  Even with brown I suppose!
